I was given Atlas sectional track that was likely purchased in the 70's, maybe even late 60's. Am I wrong, or was there a change and improvement since then in the rail material used ? Is there an easy way to tell if I have the better track or not ? The track is in the original boxes and I would like to use it but I don't want to use it if it's going to mean continual unscheduled stops. Thanks for any input.

Although both technology in die making and in die materials have come a long way in the past 20 years or so, Imperfections cannot completely dissolved in the manufacturing process. Nothing beats the use of a flat bastard file to smooth out the "bumps".

I have some old brass AST in my layout is works fine. It dose not cause and derailments for me. I does require more cleaning than nickle silver track.

I only by nickle silver code 100 flecks track know.
