New to trains

I just purchased some trains off craigs list for my boys and now I am realizing that I don't have the foggiest idea what I am doing. I have two engines that wont move at all, the wheels are not turning can I use any type of lubricant on them to get them going again? I have 3 working engines but I can only run one at a time, what do I need to invest in to be able to work more engines?
