Lionel 2035 Loco will not go into reverse

I have a Lionel 2035 Loco that will not go into reverse. From what I've been able to gather, the reverse is activated by a voltage boost from the AC transformer. Any thoughts on where to start?

Welcome to the forum! A 2035 I don't have one of those. They are all good in those years.

It's not an AC boost. Well sort of
A power restart cycles your reverse unit. You will hear clicks.
If not, move the lever to the other side and it should cycle. Now you are just in forward. You can also be stuck in reverse or neutral by moving the lever back.
