Let's see your carnage photos.. whatever you got. I'll start by posting the two times I have majorly gotten stuck in the snow:

My Pathfinder stuck in the field - crappy cell phone pic but the 'depressing' factor really shines here.

Sorta.. that's the lane to the main road, which is 1 mile from my place. It doesn't get plowed since I'm the only guy in there right now and I don't want to pay to have it plowed. So either 4x4 if the snow is low or snowmobile if the snow is high.

No one helped get it out, just me and my girlfriend with some shovels :(

Kentucky Winter Carnage.

Here's my contribution....horribly cold, that day. Thermometer dropped like a stone to near 75F, the ice trays looked as if they were freezing over as we watched. People in the picture were fleeing in fear, trying to get indoors before it got any worse....terrifying.

*grins* I couldn't resist it. I love showing your hardier-types how bad we have it, down here. That lady in the front is my girlfriend. Incidentally, we actually are in the middle of a pre-storm panic, down here. I went out and bought (2) 1-pound boxes if ice-cream salt for the sidewalk outside my apartment. (I'll probably use one box.) We're expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow, tonight. I'm not kidding about the panic: my boss had me call around and arrange for someone to plow the snow and rocksalt the parking lot, here at work. The groceries will probably sell out of bread and milk by 7 pm, all over town, as we hunker down in the face of "a big one". *L* As for me, I'm heading over to the Y after work to swim laps.

tworail why are you driving around in a field?
trying to see if you get stuck?

Looks to me like you need a good set of chains and put some weight over the axles?:D

edit...........................

maybe a winch would help too.:)

edit again.........................
maybe you should get a plow too?:D

3"-5", Reckers? That's a dusting just to your North. The weather wizards with their crystal ball, incense, eye of bat, and ground up monkey tongue are saying 6"-10" here.

I'm building an igloo just in case.........

Bob,

I couldn't agree more. I look at it and say, "Yeah, a little snow, big deal." Then I leave for work very early to avoid the crazies who panic. We ahve a cold front coming in around 1 pm to really freeze the mush into packed ice, so that will be more interesting. I may have to leave early to get to the Y. *L* Snow emergency, you know.

Was that yellow thing a snowplow? Incidentally, we got about 6 inches of snow. The mayor announced, this morning, that it was not Snowmageddon and life would go on.

Didn't call in the army to dig you out eh?

There was a huge debacle in Toronto in 1999 when the Mayor called in the army to help deal with all the snow.

"Lastman gained national attention after multiple snowstorms, including the Blizzard of 1999, dumped 118 cm of snow and effectively closed the city. He proceeded to have the Canadian Forces (Army) aid in helping to shovel snow, and use their equipment to augment police and emergency services. The move was ridiculed by some in other parts of the country fueled in part by traditional anti-Toronto sentiments.

He paid back the soldiers by giving them each a free NHL Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey pass in honour of their hard work. These tickets were obtained free of charge due to an agreement with the Toronto Maple Leaf's management claiming that if these soldiers had not came out to shovel the snow, then the Leafs game that day wouldn't have had as many people attending"

Nah----we just stand back, drink bourbon, and let the fumes do the rest. *L* that's a good story! Does each Canadian Province have control of the portion of the army? Down here, we have something called the National Guard, a sort of state militia. It's under direct control of the state governor unless the President activates it and attaches it to the Federal Army or Air Force. Right now, the local Air National Guard has been activated and is flying non-stop cargo-delivery missions to Haiti. They offered tickets to their hockey games to the airmen, but there's not been a lot of interest. I was in the Army national Guard about 100 years ago---can't say it was a lot of fun, but I got to sleep in mud a lot.

tworail
02-09-2010, 03:28 PM
There is no unit like the National Guard for each province as far as I know. Army and Navy etc are at the federal level and can be invoked whenever needed I guess.

In this case the mayor probably got all the troops from CFB (Canadian Forces Base) Downsview, which is pretty much in the city limits.

Here's my addition to this. This was taken around 10 this morning. I had it all plowed out around it at 9:30 and then we got dumped on again at least it doesn't get stuck easily.

Agreed, but that dust makes for poor traction in the Alleghenies. There were also a lot of folks off the road north of Memphis, IN, this morning. Oddly enough, everyone interviewed as the wreckers drug them out of ditches said they were from Chicago!

Power just came back on. All our snow is melted away. Today was actually a nice spring day.

Just wanted to let you know that I lost power for 24 hours. Last night(thurs) I came home from work and a power line was down. I do not know why they blocked the road for a power line that had no power???
We had stong winds and most of the region lost power. I spent almost an hour trying to get back home but three different roads had huge downed trees. So I drove back to the first road and parked at a local gym and walkes back home. They couldn't stop a determined pedestrian in the rain.
traffic was a mess that night because everyone was getting blocked and reversing direction. So that's my winter story.

I did work on trains, I got rails installed on two 022 switches.

I spoke too soon it's snowing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Storm? What storm? We get snows like this ever 10-15 years and everyone goes Schitzo....

Back when I was a kid we walked to school barefoot thru 5-foot drifts. Milked the chickens, gathered pigs, slopped the sheep, and sheered the cows when it was -20*.

I went to Harve De Grace, MD.

Left the yard in the thick of it. A normal 2 1/2 hr drive took 4 hrs!
and all it was was from rolling road blocks plowing snow!
No accidents, no traffic!

A lot of folks stayed home which made driving nice if it was not for the plows!

And what snow they plowed to screw up all the traffic was not much at all. 10 mph! Around 8 plows with 10 pickups and cars and cops escorting them.

All on overtime because they spent the day before plowing water. As the snow they thought we would get on that day never came. All the salt they spread out was washed away with rain and you wonder how they spend 2 million bucks on one snow storm.

When it really snows you don't see them!!!

They got hammered Northwest NJ and NY, N west CT and the Poconos, but around here all the roads were melted by the time I turned around and came home. We got around 16" at my home.
One driver left an HR ahead of me and went to Brattleboro, VT and made it back before I did.

Everyone including the weather stations make more of some of these storms then they should.

T man you work?
I thought you might be retired?

What kind of work do you do?
Are you a car body repair man with the good old Epoxy?:D

Bob I used to walk to school in 8' drifts too! I don't think I ever had a closed for snow school day. If it was closed I had to walk there to find out anyway! There was no way to tell if it was closed. It wasn't the same thing like today with all the modern conveniences you got today to be notified of such a thing.
Now we get a recording the night before that school is closed and they don't even know what kind of storm it's going to be.

Sometimes it's nothing.:laugh::rolleyes:

Let's see. 6 foot man remembers 8 foot drift = 3 ft boy with imaginary 4 drift.:)

The south has got all the snow we only got a couple inches. Snow has never been a problem, you just wait it out. That is hard to do without power. The wind was the culprit this time, usually it is freezing rain.

This was a double header. The branch broke off( in the center of picture) and toppled a tree that leans into the back yard.

I think that everyone may remember the "Blizzard of '78". Everyone makes a big deal out of that one, and it was bad. But, I thought the winter of '77 was worse. We had Ice, then snow. Not as much snow as in 1978, but the ice under the snow in '77 made things much more treacherous.

Yes, being without power can be dangerous as well as inconvenient. That's why I would recommend anyone building a new home to figure in the cost of an emergency generator into the cost of construction. And, if one could afford it add wind generators. One could sell the unused power back to the grid.

The better half ALWAYS stocks up on essentials before a storm. A trip to the store for milk, bread, food, and TOILET PAPER is common with her before the Big 'Un. She always makes sure we have enough propane for the camping stove and grill, batteries for the lanterns and flashlights. I think she was a Boy Scout(their motto: Be Prepared).

Although I make jest, I do hope all are safe and sound.

Bob

We've gotten about 8 inches of snow and it still falling. No power problems yet. Just water problems yesterday. I need to get out and plow later.
