Nice link, thanks:thumbsup:
You know......you......got to go about finding you a spot for a layout.:D
You don't have one yet do you?
Not yet... another model building hobby took precedence.
My 88 year old Mom needs to be with us, so I've been building her a tiny house to live in.

It's my design of a completely self contained living unit in a very small space, and has everything a big house has: stove, refrigerator, electric service, hot water heater, sink, toilet, shower, remote thermostat heat, bath ceiling heat, bath vent fan, 30 inch ceiling fan for cooling. Completely insulated, tile floors, upstairs loft, and a skylight.
She just moved in, and now I can go back to digging out the basement. :)

Very nice design / construction. Two questions:
1. Can you build one for my Mother-in-Law?
2. Are they transportable, so that I can have it trucked far, far away?!?
:rolleyes::laugh:;)

No... but you could.
It's just a big model train. ;)

I completely understand, tj...
We had to build her a house to preserve our sanity!
The complete project cost only 15k... way cheaper than a nursing home.:)

At least you didn't build it in the shape of a shoe.
Nice little house. I doubt if they let you build something like that here in Jersey.
A little bit bigger you could make it into a train house for your layout in future years.
But, God bless your Mom may she have many more good years. My Mom just hit the same age. Though I don't think she would be able to climb up into the loft it would need a lift chair installed for her. Or a small elevator.
You should have built it in the shape of a caboose with a bay window.

I know what you mean, Ed.
She sleeps downstairs and we just use the upstairs loft for storage.

Greg,
This is really a clever use of a very small space. In looking at your pics, it looks like half of the space has a cathedral ceiling (over the bed?), and the other half has the storage loft (over the kitchenette) ????

Yes. :)
The downstairs is 10 feet by 12 feet... and upstairs is a 10 foot by 8 foot loft. This leaves 10 foot by 4 foot open 13 feet up to the top with a 2 foot by 2 foot skylight in the roof. There are a total of 6 windows and a skylight, so you don't feel closed in.
My Mom is happy as a clam in the little place. She's comfortable and safe with us watching over her, and yet has her own space to do as she pleases.
The design is just an even smaller version of the small 1,100 square foot home my wife and I built for ourselves...

...which is also a loft design with a completely open cathedral ceiling. While the living room is only 12 feet wide, the distance from the floor to the top of the ceiling is 21 feet tall with two 4 foot by 4 foot skylights and high arched windows on three sides.
I believe that tiny homes will be the wave of the future. :)

Greg,
Wow ... your "big" house is BEAUTIFUL! Looks like something old, right out of the French our Italian countryside, but with a touch of modernism. Very, very classy.
I like tall ceilings, too. I have a wonderful old 9' tall mahogany model sailboat ... the type that people sailed on ponds in the days before R/C. When I was house shopping years ago, my 2 most-critical criteria were: a basement for shop stuff, and a tall ceiling somewhere to hang the boat. We found both in a neat converted carriage house ... about 21' of height in the living room. The sailboat model hangs over everything ... kinda neat, I think.
