I just picked up my first ads off eBay and was wondering if anyone here has ever framed old magazine ads and if so, do you have any tips?

EDIT: Oh yes, and the third image above is also a little foreshadowing, hehehe ;)

Hey B&M, :)

Although total amateurs, we've framed lots of stuff. I frame old lithographs and my wife frames her paintings. Our best source of frames are at yard sales where we pick up any old crummy ugly pictures just for the old frames and glass. They're on every wall of our home. Some are cleaned up, while others are stripped and refinished.

It's lots of fun because you'll never know what you'll find. :)

All you need to take with you are the measurements of what you want to frame, then go hunting for old frames that will work. Some pictures have no border while others have them to fit the frame. We've even had a few especially nice ones professionally matted (mounted in multi colored razor cut layered borders).

You have some really neat old railroad pics....and they would look even neater in old frames. :)

Second suggestion....you can buy an oversized frame and a precut mat that fits the frame, center the item in the mat's opening and tape in place. This works well for odd-sized items where you don't want to invest in a custom-made frame. Sometimes, double-matting helps: buy the oversized frame, buy a precut mat that fits it (but has an opening too large for the item), then center a second, smaller mat in the opening of the first mat and the item in the center of the second mat. Contrasting colors and light/dark and different textures can really enhance your item. If your frame and mats are all off-the-shelf stuff, it keeps the price affordable.

If you have any hope of preserving your old ads, graphics, and such, it's VERY important that you mount the image with only ACID-FREE materials ... mats, backer-cards, etc. Many cheap, off-the-shelf pre-cuts mats (WalMart, etc.) are acid-based, and will slowly oxidized, bleeding a brownish color onto your print. I highly recommend that you spend a few extra dollars and work with only acid-free products.

Cheers,

What I do is find a professionally framed picture at Goodwill, etc. You can tell from the paper glued on the back side.
I used an Exacto to lift it off , then switch out the subject matter.
Foam core or acid free matting is a must, as mentioned before.
Remove the plastic shrink wrap too. Do not use any tape.
