I beg to differ with you, my friend. :D

MULLICA TOWNSHIP — When Ellen Strack purchased Kate, then a sick, bony, 27-year-old thoroughbred being auctioned for her meat, she didn’t think the mare would make it.

A veterinarian came to look at the horse, and brought a needle in case it was beyond saving.

The vet found it had EPM, an infectious neurological equine disease that made her seize and spasm several times a day.

But Strack said she felt the horse wanted to live, so she gave the mare a chance on her 30-acre farm, where she gives neglected or unwanted horses a new home.

A year later, on a recent afternoon, she looked at Kate again. Her ruddy hair shimmered in the sun, and Strack said she wanted to cry.

“People keep saying, ‘Ellen, you’re going to fail,’” she said. “But I’m not going to fail at this.”

Strack founded South Jersey All Breeds Horse Rescue in February 2010, after learning that horses are still auctioned in New Jersey and shipped to either Canada or Mexico for slaughter to make cuisine in other countries. With the help of volunteers and donations, she has rescued dozens of horses from those auctions as well as negligent homes.

She has 11 horses now at her home on Pleasant Mills Road in Mullica’s Weekstown section; 17 have been adopted in the past 20 months by people throughout the region.

But she did not eat them as she was saving them from the butcher.;)

Thanks Reckers, another for my Jersey thread.:D:thumbsup:

You're more than welcome, Ed. *L* I saw your post and thought, "I'll bet if I googled it, I could find someone in NJ who ate a cat, dog, horse or canary recently, just to jerk Ed's chain!"

As for the "Kentucky" part, I'd like to share a story with you. A friend of mine went for a Sunday drive through the (Kentucky) countryside. Topping a hill, he saw a pond below and sailed on past it...then slowed to a stop and reversed. He backed up a half-mile or so to confirm what he thought he'd seen, then took the nearest driveway and drove up to a farmhouse. He got out, knocked on the door and a farmer answered.
"Excuse me, sir, but out by the road...I saw a pig with two artificial legs. I couldn't help myself--I had to come back and ask."
The farmer beamed. "That's my pig, and son, let me tell you about that animal. Last year, my wife left the stove on and went out to hang laundry. The curtains caught fire. That pig smelled the smoke, ran up the hill, crashed through the screen door and dragged the baby to safety, then ran to the wife and tugged her dress till she saw the smoke."
My friend waited, puzzled. "But...the artificial legs?"
The farmer looked at him in disbelief. "Mister, let me tell you about that pig. I was mowing a hillside last summer and rolled the tractor on it's side. I was trapped under it and part of it was on my chest: I couldn't breathe. That pig saw what was going on and barrelled up the hill, grabbed the strap of my bib-overauls and began backing up, dragging and grunting until he had me out from under that tractor and I could breathe, again." The farmer nodded, proudly.
"But...I don't understand..." My friend began. The farmer interrupted. "Son, let me tell you about that pig. Last fall, my twelve-year-old son was swimming in the pond and got a cramp in his leg---by all rights, he should have drowned. The pig saw he was in trouble, swam out and pulled little Ethan to the bank. If it weren't for that pig, he'd have surely drowned." The farmer crossed his arms and beamed, triumphantly.

My friend stared for a moment in disbelief, then blurted, "But what does any of that have to do with the pig having two artificial legs? You have a hog down there with two artificial legs! WHY???"

The farmer eyed him in disbelief. "Well son, when you have an animal that valuable---you don't eat him all at one time!"
