Hey, y'all, I'm looking to get a GPS for my car. I'm hoping we have some electro-gurus around that could help guide me to a good purchase. I'm not looking to spend too much but... duh... wanna get the best deal I can. I'll most likely get it off eBay

In particular, I would like rerouting, speed read-outs, something that gets close to the exact addy I'm looking for. Heck, I dunno, maybe they all come with these features

I've looked at the Garmin c330, Nuvi 200 and TomTom One. Decent units? Any better bang-for-the-bucks unit out there, maybe along the lines of the under-rated numbers?

Anyway, any guidance would be appreciated :D

I've always laughed at the techno-types- what do I need a GPS for?

Well, I recently starting delivering pizza for Dominoes, make a little extra scratch on the side. They pay me $7/hr, but with tips, I make $15~20/hr  !!! And of course, most of that is under the table $$$s ;)

Anyway, a GPS sure would be handy for that. They got them by the boat-load (railcar-load?!) on eBay at some really good prices, but I don't know squat about them...

Thanks anyway, B&M.

I think a GPS would last longer than a cell phone. It would be wise to invest a little more. I would go with a bigger screen. I don't have an opinion on any diffferent types. They are neat but I haven't bought one yet. Let us know how it goes.

Good points, T-Man. I wonder if they're like cell phones, you know, every three months, a new one comes along with more features that makes last month's obsolete?!!?

In any case, I've kinda put it on hold. A friend of mine runs a pilot-car company (actually it should be called pilot-trucks!!). Those are the trucks that lead and follow the big oversized load trucks down the road, with the flashing amber lights and flags and clearance poles. I need to take the certification course but the gig is mine :D He says he has so much work, he has to turn work away!!

LOTS more money there :D

But I gotta say, the Dominoes gig has really turned out pretty well- much better than I had expected . I figure I average $15/hr... to drive pizzas?! Shoot.... easy work, work with a bunch of kids... easy stuff. I've had some $20/hr nights, my worst has been $10.50/hr, but that was my first day.

And they all say, with football season about to kick off, things will really pick up :D

If anyone's looking for an easy way to make a little extra scratch, I highly recommend it  Just make sure you have an economy car!!! Man... I get about 30mpg average driving to and from work. I figured my mpg tonight for the first time doing pizzas.... 21.5 mpg   I'm not real pleased about that, but if you wanna make runs, ya gotta hustle... And I'm spoiled... I run with the A/C on 95% of the time :p

The pilot car gig oughta be good, just hope you're not in traffic too often!

For GPS, I can't offer much advice. I've never had one before, until I bought this new car a couple months ago. I'm a real estate appraise, and I'm all over the state. I could find virtually anything on a paper map. But I've gotta say, having this thing built into the car makes life far, far easier. I push a button on the steering wheel and it asks me where I want to go. I yell at it for a minute, and it takes me there.

Best is when it reroutes me for traffic, or the other day when the only highway in the area was closed from an accident on a bridge, it showed me the way around very quickly. Of course, it can't distinguish between rough dirt roads and paved, so I had a fun river crossing, but it still got me there.

My wife laughs because it does her job for her. If I miss a turn the thing starts yelling at me.

"Make the next legal u-turn, you bozo!"
