Howdy,
A quick question......is there a time-out timer on this forum? Seems like if I go away for about 5 minutes or so when I come back I must log in again in order to post. Is this by design?
Thanks,
Bob

You need to have you cookies saved, you probably have a security application that is removing the browser cookies.

I've been logged in for months.

It has been that way since I have been here.

Go to another window to get something, like an attachment, come back here to post it and I have to log back on.

the remember me box checked does nothing.

I learned to live with it, when I log back on I click today's posts to see all the new posts.

My computer gets turned off at nights.
I don't stay logged on for years.:D

It has been discussed here,

I'm not so sure about that, Ed.

Bob, make sure you toggle-check the "Remember Me" box just below your login info when you log in.

I am sure.:D

No matter what I do, if you don't keep active on the site you get bumped off and have to log back on.

I can start a thread then go to the kitchen to make something to eat when I come back 10 mins later and finish the thread, I have to log back on before it gets posted..

Well Ed, it's not the forum that's causing your issue. I've been logged in forever, when I come back here, I'm recognized right off the bat, no login at all.

Try logging out and erasing all your cookies, then come back and login.

Ed I thought I remember you said you use Firefox. Go to tool/options and look under the privacy and security tabs. You might have to change a few settings in there. If you need help just yell I'm good

Well, Ed ... looks like you'll just have to stop going to the kitchen! :D;)

TJ,
I have the same issues as Big Ed......leave for a few minutes and then I have to log back in. I've even been in the middle of replying to a post, then when I hit "submit reply" I'm told I'm not logged in :thumbsdown:
What's up with that????:(
And, also like Ed, I've found the "remember me" to be useless as a crowbar in a watch factory :D
Yes, I've got more security on this computer than a nunery at midnight, and that's because I've had more virus attacks than I care to count.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with another little annoyance :ohwell:
In the end, it's worth it :) :)

Hey Bob,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have seen this pop up and then (on other forums I deal with) and I can't say for certain exactly what the cause is. I would try different browsers ie Firefox, IE, or Google Chrome and see if it happens in each one.

In the interim, I would suggest 'copying' your post before hit submit, just in case you get logged out. Also, if you press the back button you should be able to see your post and get a copy of it.

regards,
John

I use firefox and I can stay logged in and do anything I want on other web pages for as long as I want and never be logged out.
I also turn my computer off at night (well around 3:30am anyways) and when I come back on here I'm still logged in.

If yall are being logged out after 10 min or when you turn your computer off then it must be your browser settings.

Bob what web browser are you using?

Bob and Ed I would assume you have similar problems on other sites?
When you get kicked off here - do you have to do username and password or just the password? I'm sure all that is needed is a simple tweak of your browsers settings.

Thanks for your concerns and suggestions :)
No, this doesn't happen on any other site I visit. I can log on eBay, etc., and it good for the day, or more!
Not sure about browser settings, Firewall, etc. since I'm NOT the computer guru in the house. That honor is all on the Mrs. :D, but I'll run it past her today and see if there's a simple fix.
Thanks again,
Bob

Ahh ... the dreaded PFL ... Premature Forum Logout ...

I had discussed this a while back ...

http://www.modeltrainforum.com/showthread.php?t=3169

The "Remember Me" box fixed the problem on my end, but I suspect that certain browsers, security settings might not allow such an easy solution.

Many times, deleting all the cookies and then logging in again with the "remember me" box fixes this issue.

grjohn,
I fanatically delete EVERYTHING two or three times a day with C Cleaner, so I don't know how any cookie could have survived :D

I have no problems with any other site just this one. And I have a ton of them.

Many times, deleting all the cookies and then logging in again with the "remember me" box fixes this issue.

Every time I log off I delete cookies then when I log back on i put the user name and password AND CHECK REMEMBER ME BOX

Cookies is what remembers your login info.
If you delete your cookies then you'll have to log back in.

You should not get thrown off if your writing a thread and then go to get something to eat (not cookies) and then when you try to post it asks you to log in again.

You should not get thrown out when you don't even leave, just from taking a while to type it will throw you out.

Uhhh ... Ed's in the kitchen ... grabbin' some cookies!

Me no cookie monster.
I am more the surf and turf type.:D

I do do what two rail says before I submit I do a copy just in case.
But most of the time I don't need the copy, after i log back on it submits the post.

The biggest thing you loose is the new posts you didn't read then you either miss some or have to search for them.

tworail???? still around? :rolleyes::D

My settings seem all right.:ohwell:
I just learned to live with it.

Like I said it is just here no where else on the net.

And I have the EXACT situation as big ed.......if I dilly dally while typing a post, by the time I'm ready to submit the bugger I have to log in again.
Don't have this problem anywhere else on the web at any time with this "genie in a box", aka, computer!
I'll admit to a chocolate chip a couple times a week :D

grjohn,
But........you must realize I'm also the guy that gets up to the check out at the supermarket and the cash register quits/runs out of tape/or the clerk takes off for parts unknown.
I'm also the guy who runs over to Penney's to pick up on a terrific sale item and am advised they just sold the last one.
I'm also the guy who careems into the gas station on two wheels to take advantage of the current low price only to see the guy changing the sign and the pump change price before I start pumping.....
Get the picture?

Dam you must be my lost twin.

And I thought I was the only one.:D

Are you left handed or a righty?

raleets
04-07-2011, 07:37 PM
Hey, big ed, check this out........I was supposed to be a lefty, but my parents believed the teachings of the Catholic church, which claimed left handers were disciples of the devil, so they tied my left hand behind my back and forced me to be a righty. :(
That's the reason I've lost at least 45.8 million in income because I couldn't pitch in the major leagues
Woe is me

OK, here's another gem. I was about finished returning a PM to a member of this forum when I was taken away by a phone call for about 5 minutes.
When I finished the message and tried to submit reply I had to log in again:mad:
