View Full Version : Site slowdown?
gunrunnerjohn

I've noticed that the site has been MUCH slower the last week or so. It sometimes takes a minute or more for a topic to display. Don't know what's going on, but I'm sure it's not my connection, no other site has any issues. I have a fiber connection with 35/35 megabits each way, so it's not me.

It's not just you John.
I'm having to hit refresh a lot because it'll freeze on me and I can't load a page.
And that is only on this site.
Everything else I do on the web works just fine.
gunrunnerjohn
04-13-2011, 12:03 PM
Sometimes it's fine, other times it's very slow. Yes, I've had to hit refresh at times too. I have no issues at all on any other forums or other types of Internet sites. I'm currently downloading a DVD image from Microsoft at 5 megabytes/sec and using the Internet for surfing as well, no issues at all.
Right now at 13:00 on the East Coast, it's fine. This morning it was painful.

My access speed here is also sporadic. It's like there is some item in the chain of loading that delays the rest of the process from completing...
...and then other times while it's not great, it's ok. :)
I'm not a computer person, but the comparison to the performance of other forums is striking even to a "layman".

Glad you posted the question ...
The site's been much slower for me the past few days.
(Not so bad today, though.)

It's fine right now, but it goes in fits and starts. I'll be cruising along reading and replying, and suddenly everything will just seize. Occasionally, it'll time out and I have to refresh, other times it'll come back slowly.
This has all the earmarks of a vB database issue, that's typically what bytes these boards.

It seemed to be slow this morning but it never timed out on me gunrunner. Much better now.
I have Cox Cable and thought of switching to FIOS until I saw the slower speed on a neighbors computer. I'll stay with Cox. My brother has ComCast, he says a lot of bad words :eek:describing their service and prices.
gunrunnerjohn
04-13-2011, 03:15 PM
It's fine right now.
FWIW, I'm as pleased as I can be with FiOS. Check the speed in the first post, you can see why. Stuff happens instantly on my connection. Even with a number of computers on doing downloads and the like, you'd never know. They've also been many times more reliable than Comcast.

There is differently a problem at sporadic times. I have it on the home computer, in 4 different field offices I visit that are with in a 100 mile radius and on my laptop that I use in hotspots.
Using Firefox it tells you "waiting for modeltrainforum.com" It all started when the two club links showed up and a day or two before the newsletter circulated.
One thing it never last long. I'll just come back in 15 minutes and everything is fine. The only problem, all threads are marked as read and I get stuck using quick links/today's post
gunrunnerjohn
04-13-2011, 03:33 PM
It's happening right now, I had to wait almost a minute to get to the last post of this thread, that's absurd. I see it's transferring data from amscdn.btrll.com on the status line, my guess is some ad thing is the problem here. That site will be on my block list right after posting this. :(

FWIW, I put that site on my ignore list and it's fine right now. I've had this issue on other boards, and it once turned out to be some ad server was screwing things up, so I'm tuned into stuff like that.

Its not our server, our hosting provider has identified some other servers that are abusing bandwidth and slowing down our sites. They are working to shut those down.

Whatever it is, it's killing the site. At times it's so bad that I just pack it in. If they can't solve it, I think it's time to consider a new hosting company!

We have had further discussions with the hosting company, could I please ask you to send a PM as soon as there are any issues to
me during "European hours", say up to 3pm ES (I am in the UK)
to Flight Director after that (he is based on the East Coast)
This way we can issue a new ticket with the hosting provider giving them a better chance to see who takes all the available bandwidth that we pay for.

Well, I think they're hiding in the corner right now. Yesterday and today it's suddenly back to it's snappy self, nothing like the previous week or so.
The odd thing is it came on suddenly, like flipping a switch. For months the forum ran fine, then suddenly it was snail-slow! It wasn't like the traffic built up over a period of time.
Several if the incidents have been so bad that it was virtually impossible to do anything, so even trying to PM might be a challenge if it comes back. :)

I'm thinking they have a very busy site on the same server and it's affecting this site.

Not sure what a "dropped packet" is, but forum pages wouldn't load for me several times today. I had to refresh a bit to see a page, and often that wouldn't work either.

That's one symptom of dropped packets. If you get results after a refresh or two, it's likely the first request got dropped.

I've heard that with so many people going online that the servers are getting bogged down with traffic. I'm not sure how the system works but I've read where our signals can get bounced all over the world to find the best route to our destination.
Right now my PC is going pretty fast but later in the day it will slow down---a lot. Could be our problem here too. Pete

Actually, I think the issue is more they're running like 15 boards on the one server. If one board suddenly has a lot of traffic, say huge video or graphic downloads/uploads, it'll impact all the boards on the server.

Actually, for the last two-three days it's been fine. I have to occasional slight delay of 3-4 seconds for a post or thread to come up, but no dropped packets or huge delays.

My theory is that you may be getting followers. There are times when I am trying to finish a post and have difficulty. I think it is the number of members pinging your location or trying to read your posts. Mine get compilcated so I may post once then improve it. If someone else starts to read it then it slows. Also there is the member "what are they doing key". You get pinged by that key, it must cause a delay. What do I know, it's my theory. I have noticed the worst times are when I am in the middle of something and it is easier to log out and in again then wait.

I've been involved in computer boards for well over 10 years. I've done administration and moderation on a number of boards. If you get dropped packets and the kind of slowdowns I've see at times here it's almost always an overloaded server, software issue with the board software, or the hosting site has network issues. The one board I moderated for years has over 5000 users on at one time during peak periods, they ran on a cluster of servers. When it was running well, the response was instant, even with a full load.

John could you post a diagram of how this works? Like if I'm sitting at my PC where does the signal go when I type something like this? I don't mean geographicaly, what kinds of equipment does the message go to before it reaches this site?
I just have no idea what happens after I hit the send button. Pete

Goodness, the path it takes is determined dynamically, and can even change many times as you are working in a single session! Also, as far as the hosting company is concerned, their structure will be unique to their situation and the whims of the folks that designed it.
Suffice to say that your data makes a lot of stops on the way to the forum. For instance, here's the route from my system.

That's pretty neat but since I have no idea how to read it I think I need to rephrase my question.
What I'm digging for here is what machines does the email go through? Like what's a router and what's a server and where are they in the chain of events? Is that any better? It's hard to talk about something when you don't know what the hell your talking about. Ha! pete

Got another question for you John. I'm getting emails from people on my email list but the email is really coming from a Canadian Mall selling pharmacuticles. My contacts don't know anything about this. Usually there are five email addresses in the "from" slot, one of which will be from my email list and the rest totally unknown to me. Is there anyway to stop this crap mail? Pete

I think a tutorial on how the Internet works is far beyond the scope of this forum or one post. :)
Perhaps this might help. How does the Internet work? (http://www.howstuffworks.com/internet/basics/internet.htm)
And for some slightly advanced reading: How Internet Infrastructure Works (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/internet/basics/internet-infrastructure.htm).
They tell you far more than I can type in here in any reasonable period of time. :D

T man use to post then go back and add the pictures, in the mean time I am already asking where are the pictures.:D
I learned not to open a new T man post for at least a 1/2 an hour after he posts.
Even then I go back the next day and check it again to make sure something new is not added.
T man.....why don't you just add the pictures when you write the post, before you hit the submit button?

If you have done current malware scans for virus/malware infections, you're just going to have to ride it out. I have filters based on content that trash such mail. :)

I simply do not like having a complicated post ruined. When I submit I know it is saved. I have losts too many posts by going to a wrong window or pressing a wrong x and not being able to get back. So if members do read the posts while still in the making, then I get delayed on the pc. Sorry ED !

I simply do not like having a complicated post ruined.
After being on forums for many years I've learned to write up complicated posts in an external editor such as wordpad. That way you don't have to worry about losing it. If you don't want to do that simply select it all and select copy to the clipboard every so often. If the site goes haywire you have not lost it.

I keep Notepad open for such posts, I copy/paste the post to notepad BEFORE I submit it for keeps. :)
T Man, post as you see fit. I don't have a problem with it and look forward to your posts. You are not the only person that has lost stuff while posting. Your method works for you, keep doing it.

That is why I give your new posts a half an hour before I look at them, most of the time your done by then.:D
What I do is write a post, then highlight it and copy. I then add pictures if needed.
If something goes haywire, all I have to do is paste what I copied and try again.
Nothing lost.

Just an update on this issue: we have taken on the lease of newer and faster servers for both the forum server and the ad server and hope that we see some improvements next week when we move the ad server (is older and slower) and then again when we move the forum server.

First time I have been on in a week John. The North Easter rolled through here and trees were down all over from the weight of the snow. Power was out for only 4 hrs around me.
But the dam cable was on and off all week! During prime time too!

That is another problem for me. The generator I ordered back when the Hurricane hit was cancelled by Home depot 2 weeks later. The 8000 watt that ran on propane. They sent me a $25 card for my troubles.:D:thumbsup:
With so many buying generators they were sold out. I could have got gas powered but I wanted propane. I figured I would wait till they got them back in stock. Then this freak storm came and ruined my plans!
So with this last storm coming I got one for $1200 off e bay Friday night before the storm, free shipping 10,000 watt, tri powered, Natural Gas, propane or gasoline. That was refunded to me the next week! He was out!:thumbsdown:
So I settled on a 5500 watt that runs on propane, UPS is bringing it tomorrow. (so the tracking says)
The way I figure I will be set for some lights and fridge and heat. That is all I need.
The most I ever lost power for was around 10 hours and it was in the summer.
I am mainly worried about the fridge in the summer and heat in the winter. For the amount of time I will use it, it will be fine. (I hope):D

Ed -- that's amazing that you had two "sold out" experiences while trying to buy a gen. A good year to be in the gen, business, I guess ... with all of the nasty storms, they simply can't make/ship 'em fast enough.
Good luck with the 5500. Nice to have you back online!
