I have not bought a scanner in years, so I can't be much help.
I have a question. Dose anyone know the frequencey's that railroads use.
NS?
CSX?
There is a refinery that NS use and It is close to my home and work. It would be cool to listen to them.

You can search for frequencies based on your location. (railroads included).
Here is a list... how accurate... I don't know.

I have a pretty good Realistic model - not top of the line or anything, but
serves its purpose. Of course I didn't get into renaming frequencies. I set
a bank of say 10 different frequencies and had it scan those continuously
until a hit. sorry I can't give any exact model help.

I bought mine at Radio Shack, $179, I believe. Programmable.

I remember when I was younger that in long car rides I would use my father's CB radio to listen in on the truckers... Boy, what interesting vocabulary they had, and by that I do not just mean 10-4!
If I had any trains running though my area I would definitely be all over owning a scanner, it is a lot of fun to listen in :)
