New here , my introduction is in the main Forum. Thought I would share my new project, The Lake Erville Subdivision.
Been modeling N scale for many years but away from the hobby for a while. My new layout is one month old and I have done alot in the last 30 days.
Got so caught up in building I forgot to take pics of the benchwork after the first day. Trains are running on the Lake Erville but the mountain division is not finished.
Things are running pretty smooth for the amount of track laid. Some turnouts are on a watchlist and may be replaced.
Almost everything used was salvaged from a previous layout with the exception of some key turnouts.

Room Size 11'x 13' Den has 4' arch / open area that is blocked by the yard but layout can be seen from outside the room there.
Regular size door on opposite side is removed and a swing down gate installed for entry to room when not running.
N Scale
Freelance design.
CP Rail from 70's to 90's
Mainline with Mountain Division and shortline track.
Continuous run or can operate.
Block sections with 2 MRC walkarounds
Flex track with cork roadbed.
Radius Mainline 22", Shortline 11"
Turnouts are #6 on mainline some #4 in yards and sidings.
Turnouts are Caboose Ground throws for now.
Buildings from older layout but will add new too.
Lake Erville Yard; 3 tracks plus intermodal service. Engine Facility.Freight service dock.
Commodoties served by Rail; Lumber Yard, Food Wharehouse, Gravel and ballast, Grain Elevator, Intermodal Yard and dock service at the yard.
May squeeze in another somewhere.
Motive Power, Kato and Atlas.
Rolling stock, Micro -trains, Intermountain, Atlas , Athearn and Walthers.

Trackage rights on the Mountain Line being built will be shared. You may see an occasional Santa Fe Or Union Pacific in the area.

I will post progress when I have time if you are interested.

Did you really encircle the whole room, blocking off the doorway access in the process ?!?:confused:

Yes I did. I wanted to be able to run long intermodal trains with 89' cars on the mainline. It takes much less room this way. The arch way from entry area gives a 4' viewing area from outside the room. The doorway? That stretch of layout has a gate that swings down. It locks in place, you then slide the joiners into place and are up and running in a few minutes. The shortline has a smaller radius and turns around within the room without going over the gate. A freind of mine did this with HO , its a little more difficult with N scale but i have it working properly. Here is a pic with the gate down today while I am working on the layout.

Got it ... clever.

Food for thought ... I've seen other members do this where the flip section lands with little tapered dovetail tongues (of sorts) that engage in a corresponding tapered keyway to lock the flip section into proper position/track alignment (without rail joiners), and then metal spring-contacts touch the bottom of the flip-track to transfer rail power from there to the fixed track (via jumper leads). A bit "Gucci", perhaps, but operation is literally just a flip-down of the moveable section, then good to go.

You're rather lucky to have the dedicated room ... I'm jealous!

Cheers,

TJ

Its my first attempt at such a gate. So far so good. I am concerned without rail joiners the track might lineup perfectly causing a derailment. The one thing that drives me nuts is "derailments". I want my trains to run and run with no flaws.
All plans and drawing got tossed aside weeks ago. I hope the gate continues to work great.
The dedicated room? I waited a long time for that room. Finally semi retired and have the chance to build an empire. Wife gets to decorate entire house , I get the one room. But she likes trains anyway.
I just need to figure out how to post pics so they come up instead of a link.

Looking good! Who needs a doorway anyway? The trains have right-of-way over pedestrians anyway, don't they? I'd like to see more pictures as the project develops.

p.s. Here is my first Z scale structure. I'm conditioning myself for an impending switch from HO to N or even Z:

Yea I think the same. When no one is around I have a tendency to just duck under. Its not that bad as it is about 44" high at that point.

Nice work on the Z model. Z scale is kinda neat but just way to small for me and not enough products.

I have got enough feedback already that I will be happy to post updates when time allows.

Not criticizing just noticing? Everything looks great!:D
Looks like that might be a joint with insulated rail joiners?
If you put a track nail on the outside touching the rail joiner you can "push" the rails over and get rid of a kink.;)

Good eye ! :)
Yea that is one area that moved this week. It is just a regular joint and too many ties missing from the flex. I have a few spots that "settled" this week. It has gone from very warm here in the desert to very cold in a matter of days.In fact its cold and raining here tonight.
I usually wait a while to put the ties under since they get glued.
If a nail and ties dont work I might solder it as well.
I took most of the trains off the layout tonight and will begin working on the track again. It had just been so long since I ran trains I had some fun for a week.
Getting kinks out in a couple areas, adding ground throws, adding the mountain division and wiring are on the list now.

Thanks ........

I know what you talking about with the heat. I lived in the Phoenix area for 21 years. My layout was in my shop up at Deer Valley airport, I did a Marathon track laying session one cool winter day and night. I used track nails at the time and soldered every joiner, a few week later it warmed up to the normal Phoenix and the 20 foot long strait run looked like the San Andreas fault line after a Quake!
I had a good friend down there get me hooked on using latex caulk to put down the cork and track, main advantage for me was that it flexes with the heat and cold changes and eliminated all the kinks and heat bends.
Something to try? Try it on a board with a scrap piece of cork and track you be amazed at the speed and end result! ;)
You Need DCC it eliminates all the isolated sections! :D

Whats the ole saying? Cant teach an old dog new tricks? Though I think DCC is cool, especially with sound,Ill leave that to the beginners.
Been collecting wayyyy to long to change now. Would cost me a fortune to change over all the power units I have in my collection. Ill just spend that on more Kato and Micro-Trains. :)

Since the new arrival of motive power the track crew took the day off.

It has been a while since I decaled, painted or weathered anything so I did just that. I dont like bright shiny colors . I like things to look real. Some collectors in the past have cringed when they see a Micro-Trains car weathered :D
Will get back to the track later this week when I have some time.

Joe and Steve are different people. Joe starts with a J and Steve starts with a S. One lives in Canada and the other lives in the middle of no-where. I think anyway. I did mean to type maker instead of marker, referring to Steve making his tiny N Scale signs :ohwell:
Any -who, loving the new motive power Joe, I agree the flag really makes their paint scheme. Weathering really looks good, I'm guessing chalk method? What ever method; it gives that dry dusty look rather then the smog and grim we get on this side of the Mississippi.

Backdrops? I am going to have an artist/freind paint backdrops when the time is right for both of us to do it.

I like the weathered look but depends on the unit. I think thos two will remain shiny for a while. The paint job is just too cool. They might get a little "faded "later on. In the meantime my project list is a long one.

[/SIZE]
Yea after running those for one night I realize how nice they look. I like running long trains 25-30 cars sometimes , so I may just have to get a 3rd UP to run with them .:D

The weathering was done with a kit called Rustall. Its an alcohol based solution. First 3 parts are liquid. Rust , black wash and white wash. When they dry you us the 4th which is the dust powder. It is like a chalk dirt. Product is awesome and just had it with my paints. Not sure if it is still availble. Would have to search and see. One warning with it from past experience. It will NOT work with either decaled or Dullcoat. It will ruin the finish and or the decals.
The wheel sets were painted with Polly rust paint. I just think they look more real.
I have other cars and locos weathered thru other methods like airbrush and chalks.

I did learn one thing this week. Decals stored in a dry place will last a long time. Thos decals on the mijack crane are over 12 years old. They set perfectly with micro set

Busy this week but will get back at the track laying by weeks end I hope.

Track Crew is busy today. I went out of town for 2 days and didnt leave the heat on. Here in the desert we have had wild temp changes plus from totally dry air to moisture. Got real cold one night .Have a few spots that tweaked while I was gone, one board warped causing a dip. So I am trouble shooting the entire track to find any more bad spots. Just proves what I already knew. Dealing with 4 materials, nickle silver , plastic, wood and cork. It is still settling in.
That is why I have not soldered many joints (with excpetion of some curves) and have not placed the ties back under joints yet.
In no hurry........I want the track to be flawless.

Back to track work and wiring.......

Conductorjoe

Major changes already :D
As much as I liked the gate idea over the door, I just was not happy with it. On my freinds layout in HO it works fine. I am looking at long term and it is just not practical. The smaller track and joiners are much more difficult to line up. So , that means major changes as I want a continuous loop. That is one reason why the mountain track had not been layed. I wanted to give the gate a few weeks of trial.
I am working on wider benchwork to allow for a decent radius. It will mean adding a leg or two but thats okay. This is what I have so far.

Making some progress this week. By removing the gate and widening the benchwork I managed to make the shortline track go from 11" radius to about 15" radius. With a contiuous loop I was able to move a crossover, and give the yard lead another 3' of track. I will also be able to add about 2 ' to the yard. I started my electrical panel and have the shortline running tonight.
The 15" radius on the lower track enables me to run all size locos and 89' cars with no issues.
The dogbone end will be in a tunnel so you will not see a loop. The train will leave a canyon and come out in another one.
I am very happy with the move to Plan B :D
I have most of the wood for the mailine roadbed cut and ready but dont think I will have it running anytime soon.

Most of the trains and buildings are set aside to prevent damage while I work on the layout. This is the "test train" I have been running to check the trackwork.

So far so good. Lost power last night in one section. Traced it to an old turnout where power was not transferring thru it. Thats what happens when you use some turnouts that are maybe on their third layout. Sometimes the parts get loose and do not connect as well.
Back to track laying today. I wanna finish a certain section this weekend.:D

Been dealing with bad weather but today it cleared off and I could cut some wood outside. Finished the roadbed on one end of the layout for the mainline. Very happy with the way Plan B is turning out.
Here is a few pics of the raised roadbed. The lower track will be covered in a tunnel with a large reach space underneath. The upper track on this side will have one short tunnel and one bridge where the gap is located.

Been busy but managed to cut the remainder of the roadbed. It is not fastened down yet, just setting in place. Need to add a few risers.Main work left is spacing in the bridges.
Track crew if off the rest of the Holiday Season.

Amazing Layout Man - I love the extensive track work. It will be awesome!! - Steve

Thanks :)
The track crew took an extensive vacation thru the Holidays. Been working the past week or so on more track work. Also my least fav, wiring. I extended the yard on both ends and have finished the lower track (short line). Have some trains running this week to checkout the trackwork.
Since getting rid of the gate over the door, I am very happy with the changes. It has taken a little longer then I thought but I am in no hurry.
To remove the gate I had to kinda redesign half the layout.

Will try and post some new pics soon.

Hey Joe, I checked out the pictures in December and thought I commented, I guess I forgot to hit submit.:ohwell:

That is an odd room, what was it supposed to be a dining room?

Thanks for the pictures, looking good.:D:thumbsup:

I liked the drop down better but if it was hard to work with the new setup should make it easier for you.

It looks like you can almost put another strip down the middle of the room for a yard or something. Just leave some room to walk around it.

Maybe a seaport in the middle?

Keep on posting Joe.
People are looking, some just don't say nothing.;)

Hello Big Ed, The room is supposed to be a den or study off the entry hall. When we bought the place it was designated for TRAINS :D
Yes I liked the drop down gate but in the smaller scale it just didnt work right.
The middle of the room? My spouse mentioned the other day , something about a small Thomas layout in the future for our Grandson. Thats down the road since he is still an infant though.
Thats a good idea but after looking at the layout again today I think its "just about right in Size". Maintaining and keeping it clean is key and I cant imagine having one much bigger in N scale. But then again who knows what ill do next.
Just like the yard. I have added a foot at each. In N scale that is alot.
Ill try and take some pics next day or so. Right now still laying track on the mainline.

Okay heres what I have been up too lately.
Finished the Mainline on one end.
Installed a deck bridge on the mainline.
Besides the full turnaround the major changes done here are,
Moved the crossover down the mainline further.
Moved the yard entrance and added a yard lead.

The yard took on some major changes. Besides a longer lead entrance I was able add about foot to the yard on both ends. I moved the intermodal track in opposite direction along with the freight dock siding. This enabled me too keep the truck terminal where it was but still expand the yard. Almost all the buildings are from a previous layout and I really want the truck terminal front and center.
I also moved the fuel tanks for the loco tracks and added to shop buildings near the engine house.
The yard with exception of engine house area is fully wired and operational. I am very happy with the outcome.

Conductorjoe
01-25-2012, 01:39 PM
I havent taken any pics of the wiring underneath yet since I am still adding to it. The entire layout is a "block system". I do not have DCC since I have been collecting for years. I have 42 Atlas and Kato Locomotives and there is no way I am converting them all, so I have no choice but to wire and run that way.
Its time consuming at times but I have the rest of my life to work on this layout.
I am looking forward to some scenery and by looking at some drop offs on the mainline some mountains may be added sooner then I thought to protect the trains. The trackwork is good but anything can happen. I simply laid the track as close to the edge in some places to expand the radius as much as possible. I dont want a Kato loco to take a dive onto the hardwood floor:eek:

So far with the redo the only issue is I under estimated the amount of track and nails I need . Looks like I will run out of both today. Dont have a local shop so have to wait for a shipment. I have plenty of projects to keep me busy in the meantime.
I am glad you enjoy seeing this and hope others do too. That is one reason I joined here is to support the hobby I love and maybe my experience can inspire or help someone along the way.

Conductorjoe

Wiring pics for ya Steve.
Some may disgaree with the large block I have on the shortline. One power hookup feeds about 20 + ft of track. The key is several things. I have a very strong power pack. All wire is Atlas 20 gauge stranded wire. Most flex joints after settling have been soldered together. All spade connectors are soldered as well as wire to track. You lose power thru loose wires and loose rail joiners. The power goes thru 2 turnouts as well but soldered joints on both sides help with the current.
The #1 block on the shortline goes from the yard entrance all the way around the bend , past ADM grain and past another turnout. The power feed to that is in the middle. The shortline has 3 blocks total .They are all setup strategically to allow operations , coming and going from the yards and sidings.
Took some pics underneath. Its kinda simple and looks messy at the moment but wont be that way when finished. It will be all tied up with cable ties near the panel.
As far as the plastic joiners? You only need to block one side but I always block both in case something ever got crossed somewhere. Once all the scenery is done you dont notice things like that anyway.

Good eye Big Ed :)

Its actually not that bad. Pics are decieving as it only rises 3" over 7 ft.

What you did notice is something I have had my eye on since I laid the track. It appears the riser I put in behind the bridge is the wrong height. It brings the track up, levels out then rises again making one stretch a little steeper. A 20 car train with 3 katos up front sails over the summit just fine. Despite that I am going to correct the riser near the bridge and that will take care of the issue.

I could have made the yard a little bigger but the truck terminal from a previous layout fit best there. The yard has a little of everything, intermodal, freight dock and engine facility. Plenty of room to park 3 trains as well.

Last night I ran out of track nails, by the time they arrive I will run out of flex track to complete the mainline on the far end. One downfall of not having a local shop. I either have to shop online or wait until I visit family in So Cal. One thing I love about this hobby is all the different aspects of it. Woodwork, working with tools, electrical, scenery, and model building. I decided to do something I had never done before. I always have every piece of track laid and running before I start any scenery. Last night I started on the scenery of the loop that is finished. The track below runs to my satisfaction with no problems so I can cover it up with tunnels. Its not much scenery yet but it is a start.

Not working this week. Its fun to wake up and decide what I want to do today. :D Run trains? Build models? Do scenery?

I guess im one of those ppl who browse but never give input, ive followed this website for awhile and never post, but long story short, you have one heck of a layout going for you.

You stated you pretty much threw your original layout plans away and have been changing your layout on the fly. Do you have a layout design you can post or no? no big deal really.

Keep up with the excellent work, i have a similar problem with what you had going with the fold down gate. I actually liked your idea but understand why you decided to change into a dogbone design instead.

You gave me lots of good ideas for my layout, your very inspiring, hope you dont mind i use some ideas from you.

Joe, Yes the room is 13x11. Some of that info is on the first page of this thread.

No I do not have a track plan on computer or paper. Im kinda old school and just go with the designs I have in my head. I guess if I took some pics from above looking down at the track an expert on those programs could make a plan.
Sometimes it backfires or causes issues. Example would be a I realized today, I have 2 turnouts I moved. Since they will be difficult to reach I was going to use under table machines. Only problem? I laid one of the turnouts right over a cross beam. No big deal but extra work. Move the cross beam or move the turnout. Ill think on that one .....

The truck terminal as I mentioned was from a previous layout. I could have tore it apart to fit somewhere and made the yard bigger but my better half said no. She wants it front and center. I am an extrucker so it kinda brings back alot of memories. What you will like but dont see yet is the shop that goes with it. it will be an awesome scene when it is all put back together.
I just got the new Athearn 28' trailers today. I plan on making my own trucking company.

Use my ideas? Of course, thats part of the sharing process.
I am kinda looking at this site as a "club" with members all over the world.
Its kinda nice.

Did a little more work with foam. Darkened the tunnel entrances so when you look into them all you see is darkness.

Notice the tunnel portals are on 2 pieces of cork. One to bring it up to level with cork and another to rise it further. "Some" portals are not tall enough for Doublestack containers especially on curves. I always raise the portals higher.
(One of the portals is setting on the wood. it has not been glued yet.)

Biged- yes some newer diesel trucks can be tricky, but alot of it is all electronic based, most of the common electronic problems are egr related-usually...

Im an old school guy myself i prefer the older freightliner fld 120s with the detroit series 60 motors- we actually have a older fleet of the fld 120s where i work in upper michigan, easy trucks to maintain.

They did have the, (not to) Swift trailer up around page 22 or so.

Joe, I had the Swift Trailer out there for measuring purposes when placing a building. I actually have a whole small tote full of various trailers I have collected over the years. They are set aside while I work on the layout.

The Swift Trailer is ConCor. They make trucks and trailers. The trailers are 40' and 45'. Probably the least detailed of all the n scale trucks but they are fine.
Atlas makes trailers and 3 axle Ford tractors. More detail.

Micro-Trains make 40' and 48' trailers , very detailed.

Athearn has older mack trucks , Ford city trucks, and 40' trailers , plus the 28' s I just showed.

Deluxe Innovation has very detailed trailers too.

My fav trucks are GHQ Freightliners and Showcase minatures Kenworths. Both nice pewter models you assemble and paint.
When I buy trucks its not always price it is sometimes who has them.Modern
N scale vehicles can be hard to find sometimes.
If you want you can PM me and I can show you all the places I buy from.

An old B-61 would look good pulling those Big R trailers.:D:thumbsup:

Products appear to be Undec ConCor , Custom Painted.

Violate your Era? What Era are you in?

I know of a construction company here in Jersey that has one painted candy apple red. Looks just like that one but a different color.

They use it everyday hauling machines on a lowboy trailer.:D

Years ago I was going to buy one to run diesel fuel & heating oil local.
It was in beautiful shape with all new chrome.

I couldn't fit in the cab!
No room for my legs and I just squeezed behind the wheel!
My head hit the roof too!

In the 5 mins I drove it around a yard, I got claustrophobic sitting in it.

I could imagine running a west coast turn around in one of those back then.
Plus it would probably take 2 weeks running to get there.:D

Big R trucks used to dominate in the east roads years ago.
They were all over the place!

Every time I try to shoot this while driving by the sign jumps in the way!
Now they moved the truck?:ohwell:

Yea i couldnt imagine driving one of those longhaul on a 2 lane highway.

My Era? I just kinda keep it modern compared to steam / diesel transition era. No specific year. Somewhere between mid 70's to 90's. Around the time they took the roof walks off the trains to around Merger Mania years.
I dont have any older trucks , steam engines, or box cars with roof walks.
I have some Santa Fe items but you wont see any Orange and Green here.
Those are the guidelines I go by. I just use that time frame to make it look somewhat real.

Saturday's project.

One of the moves I made was making the crossover and yard feed out further. When I moved it the wood that had been cut out was resting there and I didnt notice I layed one turnout right on top of a crossbrace. The area in front of the turnouts will be eventually raised so I had undertable mounts for that area . Yesterday I took the time and moved the turnout and installed the undertable machines. I had forgot how difficult it was to mount these since it had been a while. They must line up exactly perfect or they will not work correctly. Some other turnouts in hard to reach places will get these.(my back can only take so many at one time haha)

All is complete with these 2 and they work great.

Looking good so far. Sometime in the next year I'm going to start building my own layout. Mine's not going to be as big as yours, I'm thinking a 4x8. It'll will be my first set I have built although I had a couple of layouts when I was a kid. I think it one of them was a 3x3 or maybe a little smaller. I don't have much of the rolling stock left. They were in pretty rough shape and low in quality and were sold years ago. I think since my layouts' construction is probably close to a year away I may start buying new rolling stock.

Can all engines run together in the same train or do the different brands need to stay separate. I have a Minitrix, a Lifelike and an Atlas left from my original stuff and noticed they seem to be different speeds from each other.

Conductorjoe
01-30-2012, 02:58 AM
Thanks jargonlet,
A 4x8 in N scale is a nice size layout. I have had several that size in my lifetime. Not everyone can have the size layout I am taking on right now. The key to any layout is the trackplan.
As far as collecting in advance I did that last year when I switched over from Western roads to CP Rail. I found many deals on Ebay and at various stores. With what I call the "limited run syndrome" where they make limited supplies of certain items I tend to purchase the things that may be difficult to get. Like those Athearn trailers, they wont be available for long until they make more.
As for the locos I only have Kato and Atlas. I always run Kato with Kato and Atlas with Atlas. They are both good but Atlas picks up power at a different rate, pulls less and speeds are different. A Kato Dash9 will drag an Atlas GP35 all over the layout. If you put a Kato and Atlas on track near each other. The Kato will pickup first and take off while the Atlas takes more juice to get going. I like the running and detail of both but keep them seperate.

jargonlet
01-30-2012, 03:24 AM
Oh ok, I thought that they ran at different rates. I wasn't sure since all three are about 20 years old. All of my others that I used to have were early 80's Bachmann. Somehow these three survived and are in pretty good shape. I was unsure about the pickup rate because of their age and thought maybe it was something else making them run at different speeds.
I tend to pick up a lot of the limited run stuff when it comes to guitar and bass gear so I completely understand that and if you're like me it can get out of hand quickly. Well not too bad I guess since I really like my stuff.

Conductorjoe
01-30-2012, 05:10 AM
The other thing that makes a difference is amount of wheels. Most of my Atlas are smaller 4 axle Like GP35 or GP38 while most Kato are 6 Axle. More wheels, more pickup. I was going to do a comparison of a Kato verses a new Atlas SD60M with 6 axles but havent got to it yet.
The Atlas SD60M seems to be the smoothest Loco I have seen from Atlas.
Its not CP Rail , it is UP. Picked up some UP not to long ago.

Fillin in the gaps. Now that the yard is finished I can place some buildings. As said, most buildings are from a previous layout. With the track plans changing so comes changes with scenery, roads and buildings. I "think" these will stay in place where they are located. Nothing as far as buildings is glued down at the moment.
I filled the triangle space with 1/2 " foam. I also went to Lowes , got some foam and am working on the mountain.

The last pic cannot be seen from the front of the layout. I reached over and took a pic looking back. It came out pretty good. The position of that building is not a sure thing yet. I am simply trying to fill in the empty space now the tracks were moved.

Yes I will keep posting. Ill take pics of the mountain once its finished. That is another area that "changed " with the trackplan, sooooo I am having to rethink some of the scenery but I am getting there.

Oh my awesome idea from other day ? Its awesome to me as I had no clue what to do with a small vacant corner as you enter the room.
The area is in the pic below.
It is going to be a Ranch . The name will be "RailFan Ranch." :D
Thats why I asked about the Building on your layout. I may get that one or I might scratch" build since I have not done that in a while.
The only question is should I leave it lower in like a meadow or valley or raise it above the tracks , thus making a canyon the train comes up the grade thru. Im not sure on that one, I keep looking at it. Thats the fun thing about scenery. You can do whatever you want.

I like the idea of "RailFan Ranch" From my viewing angle it looks like the ranch should up on the hill, so you can look down on the two track. It would be a limited view from where it is now. Tonight I made the decision to raise the corner . I also looked thru my buildings and found one that might work for the ranch. Not sure yet.
The foam work was a slow go today as weather was awesome today and I had to spend some time on the house outside.Im getting there and at least have projects to keep me busy until I get the last bit of track I need.

Funny how things changed for me. I was going to scenic the yard and trucking company first. Instead I have started with a corner where you enter the room.

I stopped part way up the mountain to try something I have never done. In all my years of modeling I have always built mountains with hydrocal and later years added plaster cloth. Thought the process always turned out great however it was ALWAYS a MESS.
I am going with mostly foam this time , filling in some areas with plaster cloth and also using Light Weight spackling. I put some on to try and and it works great. Better than rather regular joint compound as it it is light weight and smooth. Filled in some gaps with it. It spreads like frosting on a cake with no mess.
I will sand it now to see how it turns out but so far looks good.
Also added retaining walls by the tunnel.

A horse ranch is good but a trout farm would allow you to have blue water  Then again a post and rail fence with everyone sitting would be cool too. Maybe a lone stallion keeping a watchful eye, with his mares behind him. I'm trying to find a good brand of fence for myself.

Yes, the more colors the better. I'm not particular to any Line. As far as I'm concerned, every rail line has an amazing history, and every existing/remaining one needs to be acknowledged for the contributions made.

As long as you're talking about fencing and such, I posted this a few days ago on another section of this forum. It is my use of a scrap booking "crimper" tool that I use to make corrugated metal siding. At the bottom of the page are links to a free plan for a farm building.

http://www.scalemodelplans.com/smp/tutorials/metal_siding.html

The plans are free. Sorry, I can't send you the reynolds wrap over the Internet, and my wife is going to be looking for her crimper one of these days, but in the meantime, download the plan in your scale and see if you can beg or borrow a crimper from a scrap booker. I'm going to make some metal fence for an auto-wrecker/scrap yard.

I made a mistake ! No worries. Its all repaired for the better already.
You would think with the years experience I have I would not make any mistakes haha.
I went to run trains last night and was having derails in the newly formed tunnel under the mountain I started. I popped off the foam top and found a one inch gob of glue on the tracks. I had covered the tracks with plastic by reaching under. I didnt look though. A three inch area was not covered and you got it, thats where the glue dripped.
All is well though. I was 99% happy with the dogbone loop but some larger locos were having a tough time with it. I decided to expand the radius while I had the foam top off. Its the shortline track and the big locos wont be seen there but want to be able to run anything , anywhere. Just ran 2 sd40 snoots and 2 Acw4400's thru it and all runs great. Due to braces its not a perfect radius but will be covered by tunnel anyway.
Loss? One small section of track and a few hours of time.
Just thought Id share the bad with the good.
Back to laying the mainline. Should be done with it some time this week. It will take some time as I have to fit in some bridges.

That is the " Dual Flags " scheme. Thats one thing I like about CP Rail. They went back to being called Canadian Pacific and Canadian Pacific Railway.
So many paint schemes and lettering makes it fun to model.

Only got aboout 6 feet of track laid this week. I need to cut some risers for a bridge area. I do all my wood cutting outside and the weather has been bad. Rain and today 40mph winds.
Wont let bad weather slow me down while I have free time.
So I changed gears and dug out some kits to work on. Stripped the paint off some old trailers and working on some Showcase Miniature trucks.

Also played around with Track colors today. Been a while since I have done any scenery. These are the track sidings at the grain elevator. Track color looks okay so far. May add some more bron to the ties.

Everyone had a non productive week but a little time off is good every now and then. How do you paint your rails Joe, with the weathering paint pens or old fashion brush and tape? You'll have to post pics of the Showcase trucks when your done:D

Conductorjoe
02-16-2012, 11:18 PM
Stan, Some people air brush track but I dont. I like 3 colors to come out. Rusty/Iron , brown and black for ties.
The first step is adding 3 in one oil on the top rails using Qtips so the paint does not adhere well. Then I used Polly Scale RR Tie Brown, diluted 2 parts paint one part distilled water, and a tiny drop of soap to make it flow.Applied it with a #8 brush. Last step is #1 brush with Polly Scale Mineral Red. I paint the rails by hand with no tape. Ill go back over it with more brown using an eye dropper to get more brown on the ties. Maybe a little grimy black too.
This may be time consuming to some but I dont care. I have plenty of time and the results look real when done.

The Showcase trucks? They are just being cleaned and glued right now. They wont be done for a while. They are going in the truck terminal where I am making my own trucking company. All the Tractors and trailers will be custom painted and have custom decals. I need to find blank decal paper when I have time. They will be a process but like most of my layout it will be worth every moment :D

Wow - great How To on the track  Adding oil to the rail top makes a lot of sense. Walmart, Targets and Kmart all have decal paper around here. Printing with good results/ scale size is another story. I'm going through the learning curve myself right now :ohwell:

Thanks Stan.
I didnt know those stores carried decal paper. Last time I used blank decal paper it was from Walthers. Ill check it out.
Still Cr@p weather here as far as wind. (Thats the desert for ya). Gonna work on more scenery today. This is the first layout I have ever done where I am working on scenery while still laying track. At least I have the shortline running if I want to run some trains. But if I keep up with the scenery all the trains wil be put away for a while. Thats one of the fun things about the size of this thing. So many projects I can keep busy.

Did some scenery today. Had not done this in a while. Turned out good. Not finished with the ballast but wanted to share what Ive been up too. Need to go thru after its dry and clean off all the ties.
I looked at many vids of real CP Rail trains and chose the brownish mix I made for the mainlines.
The first pic is part of ADM Grain pavement before painted. The entire area is the grain silo area and 3 sidings.

Thanks.........It was a good idea. I got the idea from a friend who models HO. Didnt work well in N Scale. To tough to line up the tracks .... So I took it out. The mainline will loop back instead. Almost gives me double the amount of track over all. Its been tricky to double it back without it looking like spaggetti.
Thats why the benchork looks different now and I am redoing the upper mainline. Kinda changed the whole layout but its working out just fine.
Should have the upper track done in the next few days. Laying track is easy for me but I am cutting in 5 Bridges and that is time consuming.

Is this the other side of the door were you were going to have the lift? haha..... No my better half luvs trains but wont let me knock a hole in the wall.

That is the other end. :D Its where the gate used to crossover. The shortline (the one that ive been running) ends before the river. Two loops going back would have been 4 tracks crossing the river ( a bit much for the small area. )

How much flex? I lost track but I will measure when all is done.

Since I dont have my trackplan in a graphic I will do a video of the layout once all the track is layed and I am running it.

The clamp is holding a small piece of wood I had cut out for the overpass. I decided to extend the passing siding so I glued the piece back in to make room for 2 tracks.
Just finished redoing the double bridge. It was on a previous layout. I put down a new base, new track and bridge abutements.

Oh okay......A freind of mine is amazed how much woodwork I have with very few legs. The key is the braces screwed into studs. When I get some time Ill take some more pics from underneath of how the braces hold everything up. I only added 2 legs when I expanded the benchork out further.
The other 2 legs are against the wall holding the yard which is the heaviest part.

One of the reasons I was away from the hobby for so long was "room" and having a rental for a while. I built a huge layout in a condo garage and was starting scenery. The complex management did a garage sweep as too many people were using the garage for anything other than parking. They made me tear down the ends of the layout , enough to park a small car in there.
It took away my interest and I decided to never build again unless I "owned".
Its been years but that time is now. No kids at home, a room I own, and a wife that luvs trains running. :D

Yessss :)
I grew up in So Cal so was always around the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific. That is what I modeled for years. My wife liked the Pacman scheme and years ago I bought the Atlas GP35.
When planning a new layout she told me it would be fun to have new roads and more color. So this layout will be based loosely on CP Rail / Canadian Pacific from mid 70's to 90's. I have mentioned before but what I like about CP Rail is the vast amount of paint schemes. Also the fact you can stay somewhat protoypical and still run alot of different motive power. The Canadian companies run locomotives in service much longer than the American companies. I have seen pics of SW1200's, Alcos and Geeps all still out there a few years ago.
They also interline with many roads and have taken over some. So you can add Soo line and others to the Locomotive list. Makes for a colorful scheme to model. Dakota , Minnesota and Eastern would be another.

I have only seen One Canadian Pacific Loco out here in AZ. Unfortunatley It was far from the interstate and my camera was in suitcase.
I do have links of pics for modeling purposes and also vids.

Was looking thru some links I had. Here is a perfect example of what I was referring to with CP Rail motive power.
This loco was built in 1958 and was finally sold in 1999. Thats 41 years of service! Thats amazing. They sure used the older equipment more than any railroad I have seen.

The mainline is finally up and running ! :D
One passing siding going up the hill has not been laid yet. I lack the wiring components for it , plus I have one last building I am not sure of location yet and may cut in a short siding off the passing siding.
The area with ballast is not done yet where the siding is. I put down too much and it floated. Will look better when I clean it up some. Mainline ballast is clean, trains run smooth but needs some touch up.
I stretched the radius on this end to accomadate 89' Flatcars so they looked better going around the corner.
Everything runs great so far.
Took a few pics. Will try and make a vid soon.

Spectacular Track Work - Waiting for that vid - Steve

Thanks you Steve :)

My thumbs feel the pain hahaha... It was worth it though. Have a couple rough spots I might redo where I soldered joints or wires. Have one piece of flex that the locos were jumping the track in the middle of it with no joints. Further review was it was not me pulling track out of scale with nails or uneven roadbed, it was a bad piece of flex that was warped. I put nails into to hold it down. Seems okay but if it gives me any problems Ill just replace it.
Someday, ill count the amount of feet. Since the loop changes I lost track of the track  I know it is 100's of feet.
May have time for that vid before family visits. If not it might have to wait until next week.

Well I made a cool vid. However I made a mistake being a newbie to youtube. The vid was a tad over 15 minutes. After hours of uploading it gave me an error. File was too big :lol_hitting:
It just turned out that long as I was trying all kinds of angles and views.
As I was watching it I kept thinking about how tired I am of plywood and picturing areas with scenery. :)
Ill try again tomorrow if I have time.

Had some spare time today and was running trains sooooo..... Decided to make a vid as requested.
Far from photgrapher or videographer here.. Glare thru the window made a few lines. I simply tried to capture the room and layout while it is all nice and clean with no tools everywhere. Also tried different angles. I have plenty more rolling stock but left the yard empty for those that wanted to see all the tracks.
Wiring??? The control panel shows a few times, looks like a mess but really isnt. I still have more sidings to wire. When done it will all be synched up and not visable.
Hope this helps those trying to figure out the room and track plan.
One issue has popped up that I will deal with next week after family leaves. 2 sections of Flex on a fairly large block are loosing power and the train slows. Need to solder them or add a feeder.
The best thing about this? Since I fixed the warped piece of flex I have about 3 hours of running time in with no derailments.
I know one thing. I am looking forward to scenery even though it will take a while. Getting tired of plywood already. haha

Comments, questions or suggestions, good or bad are welcome . Enjoy !!

Hey Joe!

I'm just a newbie starting up my own layout soon.
I also plan on using the CP Rail. Maybe even sneak in a CN Engine.(love that Black , white and Orange colour scheme.)

Anyways your layout is amazing and has a special place in my heart.

You see I live in the Ottawa valley, and just this past summer, they started tearing up the CP line that I lived near. Renfrew to Pembroke is gone.
I believe they are tearing the track towards Mattawa next. There are some nice bridges that way.

All my life I've seen these, and now they're gone.
This is the second major line that has left this area, the first being the CN line that ran through The Pontiac in Quebec and my beloved Renfrew County in Ontario.

I'm sure gonna miss seeing those mammoths.

Anyways keep up the good work.

I'll be watching.

Stan Thanks ! and Good eye !
That is an area I have been looking at since I laid the track. Looks worse on vid or far away. Two pieces of plywood didnt match up level so I put in a plastic spacer. When i fastened down the next riser it made the area kinda flaten out for a stretch. Now it kinda dips so I need to fix it. Several ways of easy fix without moving the track. I may add another riser in the middle and raise the one on the left. I could take the easy way out and put a tunnel there but thats not gonna happen.

kursplat Thank you :) and ......Great question.

The pics I took show the access to underneath where the loop tunnel is with the blue foam. Plenty of room to reach under.
Other side of layout will have a tunnel as well. Several spaces of plywood have been cut out to be able to reach up inside if you need too.

The last pic shows where I may put a tunnel against the wall. No under access since it will be short in length. Can reach in from either end and I use track cleaning cars.

brikel......Thanks and welcome !!:) I never get to see the CP Rail here in the Arizona desert but I have seen alot of pics and vids. Started with the wife liking it and now i am modeling it.

You can fix that kink this way.....

Remove the risers on either side of the kink, then cut a piece of your 3/4" plyboard the width of the roadbed x about 6" long. Center this piece under the kink and screw it together. Then just put your risers back in. The 6" section should smooth out the transition between the grades (even longer of a piece would work better if you've got the space.)

Thanks sst...been looking at it again tonight while I wait for family to arrive. That should work too. Making a list of to do's for next week.
Solder some wires. Fix that roller coaster my engineers are riding :D
What I didnt mention to Stan was that was one of many reasons I have not layed the passing siding there. Just in case any track needs to come up. I dont think it will though. Screws down into risers are on sides of track and not underneath the cork.

Stan ,I was going back thru the posts.
What did you mean it was for running trains and would not get scenery done? You would always want to be running?
I'll probably run for a while before I start major work again :D
I have some models I can build off layout in the meantime.

As for the better halfs. Mine has been gone for 2 weeks and will return shortly. She has not seen it since I layed the mainline.
I once had a huge layout and when we bought the new home I recall exactly what she said. " This room is only 13 x11, thats all you get. You will have to make it work".
I am wondering what she'll say when she sees the track and roadbed finished tonight. Ill find out real soon.
As for yours......Tell her its your Life Dream, the main thing on your list besides "family".

The bump in not really that bad, it probably looks worse on the video do to being on the incline and turn. Real rails aren't all that perfect either. I should shot some vids of NJTransit by me. These guys hand place ballast and cars wobble all around in the straight away  If you moved it up front, it would make for some cool videos :D
Rofl - Joe look how long it is taking me to do scenery on a 1x3 :o You guys can only imagine me and a 11x13  Yeap nothing would get done except running trains
My wife is cool, she prefers me doing this then other things because I make the kid work. He is still afraid of the static grass though after getting zapped :o He won't touch the thing unless he puts on my leather gloves  it is so cute . She is into Breyer Horses, so our whole bedroom looks like a farm, including plastic horse crap :o being 1/12 scale the trains don't match or fit.

Stan, thats great your family enjoys things together.

I know some real tracks are not perfect but I will repair the bump.
I understand the scenery comment now. Mine will take a longggg time to do but am in no hurry. I will start with covering all places with foam and plaster, then paint it. Details will come over time. I plan on doing like one scene at a time. The ranch will mostly be first to detail completely.
I also work part time seasonal and its almost that dreaded time called "work".
So that will cut into my model time for a few months.

G'day,

Here's a thought for ya.

If you wanna run a passenger train around that may I suggest this.....

http://thesuiteworld.com/blog/canadian-rockies-romantic-pacific-railway-canada/

It keeps your layout in theme.

I thought it would look good running along one of those red ones.

Conductorjoe
02-26-2012, 01:15 AM
Brikel.....Thanks for the link. Nice pic of the passenger train. My wife doesnt care as much for the Marroon / grey scheme so I am staying with Pacman and other schemes like the beaver logo and dual flags.
She also put in her two cents and said more freight cars and no passenger.
She doesnt make all the decisions but I like to keep her happy. :)
I have alot of grain cars that are not on the layout right now since I was working on the grain silo area.

As far as something running with the red ones.....My collection includes many roads from Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, Soo line, CSX, Conrail, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the newly acquired Gensee & Wyoming. She likes colors That I have :)

Steve, Thanks.
And thanks for the reply about the bridge on your layout thread. There is a reason I asked.
Funds have been allocated to expand :D No not the layout , but here I go with changes already. The passing siding not yet laid going up the hill , will continue as double track and connect with the siding on the other side of the single track bridge.
The single bridge area that cross over the tracks below.
Just need to decide "what" bridges. I have one more Kato girder bridge but think that would look boring. Thinking of a truss bridge instead. That model may work but I need to measure.
Made the decision last night after running long trains.

The wife is amazed at the changes I made since she was gone for a bit.

I bet she was totally amazed at the progress. It's great she is taking interest and giving opinions. I was showing my ole' lady my progress and she thought it was realistic. No I do not have any switchers, YET lol. I have a wants list a mile long but only spend so much per month. All the locos I am seeking are difficult to find as they were produced years ago when I was out of the hobby. I did find one of these. I hope it is still in stock next month.

This past month or so I picked up that custom painted SD40, also got a Genesee and Wyoming Loco the other day.
My local switchers in the meantime are 2 GP9's.
Stan was right. Gonna run for a week or so while I have cars on the layout. Will take more pics or vid once family leaves :D

Those are some terrific wood working skills you have there. Wish I was that handy.

Conductorjoe
02-27-2012, 01:22 PM
Thanks bray.......Some of the cuts are not perfect. However they were done with a rip saw or a skil saw. I was going to purchase a nice miter saw but decided the $$ would be better spent on the layout.
The key is to make everything "level". The other key is always predrill holes before putting in screws. It is 2 steps rather than one but keeps the wood from splitting.

Some pics of the benchwork braces for kursplat.....
Shows how braces are mounted to wall. One pic shows a leg against the wall to support the yard section which is heavier.
The 2x4 blocks are screwed into the wall studs with 2" drywall screws. All other screws are 1 1/4". Makes for sturdy support that seems very strong.

My project for today. Scenery on one end. Was going to make mountains with paper, plaster cloth and some foam. My daughter bought some furniture that was packed in foam. I am using the white foam from that box. it cuts well with the hot wire cutter and the price was right. Filled in the gaps and lines with lightweight spackle. Next is to sand a little and paint, then add some ground cover.

The tank in the pics is a Brass model. I want it visable and close to the tracks.
Does this tank look too big compared to the mountain I made? Or does it look okay from the pics I took?

The tank is N scale and is about 47 scale ft and the mountain it sits on is about 65 scale ft from the tracks.
Just tryin to decide if it looks right. I can always lower it to the level of foam below it. Would be simple.

I think it looks alright where it is.
If that's a water tower it just makes sense for it to be up on a higher spot.
That way they don't need to pump water, gravity will just pull it down the mountain to where-ever it goes.

Also love the height of that mountain.

It'll look good covered with a bit of snow and some evergreens.

That side of the layout will be more brownish, dry and arid with less green. I dont want everything to look the same. The other side where the river and bridges are located will have the evergreen trees and alot of green scenery.

Still not sure about the tank. Still looking at it this am. May lower it a little.

Thank you for all the feedback.
Made the decision to lower the water tank about 1 3/4". This makes it above the tracks but does not come close to appearing level with the top of the mountain. It will also make the road to it better.
Added some color FINALLY with acrylic paints. Not the final color, just a base coat for starters.
Might have a little time tonight to add more color and ground cover However...
That dirty 4 letter word "work" is calling me. ( But it pays for all the goodies) This might be it for the layout for a week or so. Will check in here, but wont be doing much modeling.

OK Joe, since you asked.;)

Most all of the water towers I have seen look like this,

16190

Yours looks more like a chemical or oil tank.

Water towers are built that way on purpose as you need sufficient water pressure to make them operational.

Read a wiki on water towers, much easier then typing it all out. Plus there are a whole bunch of different water tower pictures in the wiki. If you care to look.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_tower

I would put that tank in your tank farm and add a water tower there.

It would make a nice diesel tank there?
Though you would need a siding for fueling up the engines, unless you put the road in and truck it to a fuel station.

That is my 2 cents of "salt" for you.;)

Love the mountain.:D:thumbsup:

There are a number water tanks around here (Philadelphia, PA area) that are not on towers. These are built on a high location to provide the head (water pressure) to the mains.
