LOL, no problem. How about we keep the thread open and people can just say which is their favorite and why.

For me... well... tough decision.

Das Boot would have to be my top pick. If you haven't seen it, there is no better WW2 German submarine movie to watch.

That is one of the greats. I own the directors cut. Even with the voice overs, all done by the actors themselves, It is the best submarine move ever.

"In Harms Way" is still my Favorite movie. If you have never seen it, Google it and look at the cast. some of the greats are there.

I can't believe you guys left out movies, train movies at that, like "The Great Escape", "The Great Raid"(the title that was about the "stealing of the General" during the Civil War),...Silver Streak.....And the movie about the prison break where they stole the train... And who could forget The Polar Express?

I will get my list ready in a bit. But, you all really surprised me.

My #1 movie - Godfather part I & II.
In a close seconds: Lastrata, Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels,
The Professional, and there is a series of 3 movies made in the 60's in japan
about a roaming samurai - all very good, but I have no idea what they are
called. And I enjoy movies like Airplane, and Scary Movie parts I, II, III, etc..
you know, those goofy comedy movies.
Stationmaster mentioned the great escape, which reminded me of that Mcqeen
movie when he was in prison in French New Guinea (<-- spelling?) - that was
an epic of a movie too.

Put star wars in the title and I will buy it. I am a star wars fan since I was a kid. Since then Star Wars has become a big part of my life.

My favorite comedy as well as favorite "train" movie: SILVER STREAK (1976) with Gene Wilder, Jill Clayburgh and Richard Pryor, and Patrick McGoohan as the perfectly-played villain. Not a weak character in the movie - a tribute to the actors who were chosen. I've watched this movie dozens of times. It's one of 2 movies that I never get tired of watching, the other being the 1969 tv movie THEN CAME BRONSON, with Michael Parks and Bonnie Bedelia.

Re: my last post, I just remembered that THEN CAME BRONSON had a scene at a train station. It was filmed at the ATSF station in Holt, California. Unfortunately, the station was torn down a year or two later.

All you, "Younsters", forget the "Classics!"
Have you ever seen;
"Bringing Up Baby" (Grant & Hepburn)
"The Philidelphia Story (Grant & Hepburn)
"The African Queen" (Bogart & Hepburn)
The list of "Old" movies that were incredible is long, and filled with Drama, Suspense & Laughter.
The Bride and I watch and collect the "Classics", and our grandchildren have even become "Fans!" Their "Favorite?" John Wayne westerns! They love all his films with Maureen O'Hara. And they think that the best movie he ever made was, "The Quiet Man"

Couple of good ones mentioned: Das Boot, The Quiet Man ... gotta love any John Wayne movie.

I'd add:

Titanic -- a bit mushy in the love story department, but great history, incredible depictions of the ship, ports, etc. Nice telling of the tragic ending. Excellent tie-in to modern times, with the research ship flashbacks.

Shawshank Redemption -- nice story 'bout two guys who become good friends in a rough setting.

Glory -- great Civil War story.

Life is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) -- Italian movie about a little boy and his dad in Italy during WWII and the holocaust. One of the all-time GREAT movies ... funny, poignant, sad, all at the same time. A+++++++

The Secret of Santa Vittoria -- funny story about a small Italian town that goes to "extra efforts" to hide its hord of excellent wine from the invading German army during WWII.

Re: Emperor of the North ... never seen it ... will check it out. And ...

I have to say that Ernest Borgnine is one of the nicest, most hard-working guys on this planet. He's an ex-Navy man, and toured a Navy base in my home town last year. He couldn't have been more cordial, friendly, and thankful to all of our men currently serving. He's been married to the same girl for eons, has never had his head up in the Hollywood clouds ... a true stand-up guy, and a real class act.

Alright, if we're talking TRAIN movies, I'd have to add (and yes, it's a STRETTCCHH) -- "Young Frankenstein" ...

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: "Pardon me, boy. Is this the Transylvania station?"

Shoe-Shine Boy: "Ja, ja. Track 29. Can I give you a shine?"

And ... anything with "What knockers!" gets a thumbs-up in my book.

The wife and me don't have cable TV, so we get Netflix movies.:) Just a couple of favorites...

For laughs: Snatch, Blazing Saddles, and hilariously scathing social satire of Idiocracy.

For action: The Matrix (1), Equilibruim, and The Island.

Greg,

I'm bummed ...

Our local Blockbuster does NOT carry "The Train" or "Emperor of the North" ... I'm itchin' to see both, but don't know where to rent them.

(I gotta try this Netflix thing one of these days!)

Ditch Blockbuster...

Netflix has a huge selection, including Emperor of the North, which is on our watching list. For $19 a month we get an average of 5 movies a week in the mail...

...less than a buck a movie, and that includes the prepaid postage both ways. :)

Greg,

I think that's likely very sound advice. B'buster isn't cheap at all these days, and their in-store inventory has dwindled significantly.

Netflix is definitely on my radar.
