Now, this story really happened. It is absolutely the truth, so help me God and drive a rail spike in my eye if I'm lying. I'm not even going to spice it up one bit.

My first wife's father was one of eighteen children, all single births. That's right, 18 children. I once went golfing with her grandfather. He was 89 and shot an 8 handicap. Far better golfer than I ever would hope to be.

While playing our round of golf, I asked, "Red, Why did you have so many children?"

His reply was" Well, Bob, the train came through at precisely 3:22AM every night. It was too early to get up and too late to go back to sleep."

Blame it on the railroad.

If I didn't know it was the truth, it would be a great joke.

The train passed within 100 yards of the house with an intersection less than a quarter mile away. You know the engineer was layin' on the whistle. They didn't have diesels in that time, and the shrill blast of a steam engine's whistle in the middle of the night would wake the dead, I'm sure.

Yes, it is quite a humorous tale.

Just an add here. My dad built (4) 4-reed whistles(thank you, Lee Iacocca) out of solid pieces of stainless steel, which are operated by an air compressor. I have one. And, yes, it is loud

This is a great story, one that I will not forget.
It just gets me thinking, my mother is from a family of 11, but they didn't live by a train track.
I guess it was a busy street.
