I've used both and liked the unweathered better for the reasons given above.
I would strongly recommend using Peco turnouts, they are a very good fit to ME track.
Also use ME rail joiners not...

My guess is that you used way too much alcohol, you only need a very little.
Don't soak the ballast only wet it a bit with the alcohol.

You already have 1/2 of it built, one more leg is all you need.
