Long all over the place post.... :p

Hello all,
I have always wanted to run model trains. At one point I got a great deal on a "Snap-On" H/O train kit and ran it. Was fun. Even bought some flex track and just ran it on the floor.

I needed a new train controller (forgive me as I need to learn the terms of all the stuff) and found a guy on craigslist. He wouldnt sell me just what I needed and wanted it all gone. He was selling it for $1200 and i bought it for $600 as he had to move out that day. It was tons of boxes. Houses, trains, cars, etc...
I ended up ebaying 90% of it and some lost $ and some made money so i got my cash back and got to keep the controller. still all boxed up. Also kept some locomotives and the pennsylvania locomotive and cars. Got hosed selling the Amtrac loco and cars.. think it cost me $20 to get rid of it... oh well...

anyway.. that was years ago.

last year my friends moved into a new house and her father passed away. He had many O trains and she wanted to get them all running at some time but never did. Just the other day, she said come and get it so i have a ton of O gauge now sitting in my garage.

My father gave me a Lionel Trolley O gauge that he got at the thrift store. New in box!!!! and I was just running it but it is now acting up. I think due to the track connectors not contacting or something...

anyway... I will start to read up some and post as we do a Department 56 layout for halloween and xmas and i want to start using trains. May get them all going so cant wait to dive in more...thx all for your knowledge and patience!!!!!

Hello, welcome.

Watch running your trains over that mat of cotton.
You might have to pull lots of it out of the gears on your train.

#6 ·
One thing that helps is that you hook up the wires to the track connection. :p

Do you have a transformer? ( train controller) yet?

You need an AC transformer for the O.

i actually got the original one from the Trolley...
going through some pics.. ill post what I got..

there was one of those ones that will power 2 trains.. will power 2 sets of accessories..

there are even remote control track switches...

posting up in a few.

a lot of this stuff is in "Rough" shape.. dirty.. been sitting... got nicks, scratches... etc...

list coming in a bit.

The track you show looks like new.

Make sure there are pins in all the holes, all metal pins.
Plastic/fiber pins are used for something else.
You need metal pins for the track.

Not hard to clean up track just the top needs to be nice and clean and the holes where the pins go and the pins themselves.

No sand paper or steel wool to clean.
Track cleaning, https://www.modeltrainforum.com/showthread.php?t=2433&highlight=tubular+track

The wheels and the rollers should be clean too.
Lots to be said, just ask away.

That link to the track cleaning thread need the video and pictures are missing.
I asked the T man if he can fix it up.

It seems like a lot of old threads are messed up.
The Photobucket hijack has to do with it, as they demanded money for what used to be free for posting your pictures.
Those that didn't pay have their photos blurred.

I hope they go under, I never used them.

I would keep them all. :D

The worse car looks like the 2755 tanker.
But that could be cleaned up. You just have to take care around the lettering.

You have some nice cars. Some look in great shape.

I have never seen the hand car with the blue guys.
Get more pictures of that and the instructions when you can.

I see you have a whistle in the one box do you have the shell with it? The shell is the body.

Unless your garage is heated I would bring them inside if you can.
Moisture is not good to them.

Believe it or not some of your boxes might be worth more then the item that came with it.
Try not to damage them.

Way back then someone who got the train just tossed the box.
Some are worth bucks today.

Welcome aboard!

Jeff:

Wow, it certainly sounds like you had one heck of a merry Christmas! Lots and lots of trains in two different scales!

Welcome to the forum, and to a great hobby. It sounds like the control device you needed is a DC "power pack." I'm glad you found one.

The files below have lots of information on many model railroad subjects, including a sort of model train"Dictionary" where you can look up any terms you're not sure of. There is also a good book I recommend to new model railroaders. It's called "Getting Started in Model Railroading" by Jeff Wilson. It covers a wide variety of model railroad subjects in simple text and color photos. You can order a copy from https://kalmbachhobbystore.com/products/books
