Looks like a Marx shell made for a windup motor.
Edit,
Then again further looking it may not be for a windup motor.
Does it have a slot (hole) on top for a lever handle to come through?
You da man, Big Ed... I doubt it has any real value, just wanted to know a little more about it.Whenever I get something like this, or actually any toy train or toy, I always find myself asking who the little boy/girl was, and how many hours of enjoyment did he/she have... My darling wife liked that sentiment when I said it out loud right before I posted it, and she replied I'll meet them one day.. That was beautiful...:smilie_daumenpos:
Marx made the same trains for many years (one way to reduce costs). The motor's collector (split or single piece) would tell whether it was prewar or postwar.
I'm going to give this another shot.
The first photo is a 494 Canadian Pacific Post war.
The second photo is a 391 pre-war Canadian Pacific.
Like mentioned Canadian Pacific Marx 0-4-0, 391 made 1953-60, Was a slightly different locomotive (Second Photo). It had a round front smoke stack. The first photo shows the, 1953-60 494 Canadian Pacific.
Each were also made with the name "Marlines" on the side, Here is one 391 (Marlines), I restored awhile back. photo 3.
The shell you have is in pretty good condition.
If you decide to sell it, list it in the classifieds, or search for a motor and run it.
