I have heard that there are issues with 027 042 switches working correctly. The switch can over heat and melt the unit down. The operation of the train over the switch is an issue allowing faster passing vs issues with slow travel over these switches. I have not run my trains for over 20 years but I can not remember any issues. if an issue can it be fixed ?

You didn't say what brand of switches. I use K-Line O-42 switches and have never had a problem. Also never had any problems with Lionel O-42 switches.
In both cases these were/are with O 27 style track.

The switches are Lionel. A distributor from Lionel told me there are issues with Lionel 042 switches. I always get 2 or 3 sources before I move forward.
Thanks for your input which made me feel better about it.

The switch operates with a coil. If you leave power on the coil it will melt. It is not a very complicated switch.
