Middle rail in the straight portion of switch gets hot Does not cause a short and the switch itself works perfectly. tracks before and after the switch are fine. Obviously it's the switch BUT WHAT!

I've never had that problem. Perhaps you have a connection problem with the track on either side of the 1122. Turn the lights out and power up the switch. Look for sparks where the tracks join the switch.

How does your train run through the switch?

It's likely a poor connection inside the switch. I suspect the hot section is right near the end of one of the rails.
