What keeps the door up when running?
Well I have a 3459 which is very similar. When the hopper "dumps" a gear causes the door (side) to 'open'. Gravity will return the hopper to the level and the gear returns the side to an upright position and holds it there until the car is cycled again.
Works well. :)

Should be noted, the doors can sometimes get out of alignment and not close properly. Loosening the flathead screw at the gear, manually closing the door and then snugging the screw up again will put it back in sync with the dumping action.
