Engine #1857 in the top photo appears to date from the 1890's based on the general size of the engine and shape of the stack and domes. The tender is lettered NY NH&H for New York New Haven & Hartford, the corporate name of the New Haven RR. I located an online copy of The Steam Locomotives of the New Haven RR but the article did not discuss locomotives numbered in the 1800 series.

Based on the fluted domes and the stack flare, 0-6-0 #103 appears to date from the 1870's.

Old photos like these are great, and the fact that they relate to your wife's family history is very cool.

Apparently, not much is known about #1857. She had 63" drivers and 17" cylinders. As of the New Haven's 1904 accounting of locos, she was listed as one of a group of "inherited" 4-4-0 Americans, classified as D-7 through D-13, various builders. I did not see any specific mention of the loco beyond the tabular entry.

The New Haven never had a loco #103, but this one is visually similar to several old 0-6-0' acquired in NH takeovers of other railroads.

That would place both locos in the 1880-1890's vintage, but apparently, while the New Haven kept excellent records on their own acquisitions, they didn't have great info on ones they got through corporate takeovers.
