If you watch closely on some engines, and I'm sure I don't have all of the terminology right so please forgive me for the crude description, the two lower headlights on some engines alternate as they are approaching an intersection.

On some DCC locomotives, is it possible to attain this without a custom rebuild, or will the lights on all engines be steady? I don't think I've seen a model DCC engine with this feature. It would be nice to have. Can someone show me an example of this with their layout?

Thanks!

Yes. Those alternating lights are called DITCH LIGHTS. Some DCC decoders can operate them. They are mainly used
where additional attention should be on the loco.

Here is how Digitrax does it. You'll have to scroll down
quite a way to see the Ditch light settings.
