These appraisals seem a little high. The 1935 Lionel above w/o an engine, $3000?
For some dumb reason they did not picture it on the site... Read the conversation though and you will find that it was a 385E :)

This engine, which is known as the 385E, is one of the more deluxe engines. One of the more valuable ones. Very expensive in their day. Great color, great all the bits and pieces. A little couple flags missing here, but that's to be expected. And the tender is equally good condition. And you have a wonderful freight set here. These are not rare cars, but this is a great engine. And the whole set together would easily bring $2,500 to $3,000 at auction.

I am glad I do not collect vintage toys anymore. I still have a deep feeling for them. Stuff like these trains (the near mint 1930's set I bought last month) are nothing but works of art.

Here was my favorite piece. I bought at an estate sale for $12 and nearly cried when I decided to sell it with the rest of my collection.

I had that same fire engine when I was a kid (or pretty close to it). It wasn't in great shape ... the front grill was missing, one of the ladder crank wheels didn't turn too well. But I played with that thing quite a bit. Somehow, in moves to college, jobs, life, etc. it (stupidly!) found its way into the trash bin.

What the %$#*&^ was I thinking???
