At 9 years, I was still pretty rough on trains. I might consider Lionel HO set -- but I'm not sure there are anything other than steam sets. Might have to make your own if you want something more modern.

I don't own one, so I'm assuming they are as bullet proof as their O27 counterparts. I do know he could run it with the remote or DC or DCC.

Yeah,
Lionel only has the berk loco in it's sets. A bit more fiddly than I'd want to give a little kid.

Now that they have the model power and Mantua molds, they could produce the reliable Mantua gp20 and put out a basic DC HO set that would fly of the shelves. No sign of that though.
