i needed a good solid copper contact to run this motor. the lionel roller sparks quite badly under a heavy load and gets quite hot. the roller is great for a light bulb but you cant pull any current through it. in a matter of a few hours run time the roller is grooved and badly pitted. the sparking is not good for my track either.
i modified a marx contactor to fit across the lionel truck. made an instant difference in available power and eliminated sparking completely. lots of surface area on this copper contactor so excellent third rail contact. this was the first test, crude but worked surprisingly well...
