I have a new out-of-the-box Lionel GG-1 that was very sluggish. I discovered that the magnet was rubbing against the wheels (this was a problem is some post war GG-1 too). I pried out the magnet and reset it with epoxy. The magnets had been peened in place, so I had to smooth out the dimples first. Shims cut from a plastic key card fit perfectly to hold it in place until the epoxy set. Now it runs great. This was the case on both axles in both trucks.. Strange that this loco had the usual " Tested by xxx" sticker. Somehow the inspector missed this one.
