I have purchased two Athern F Drive Budd cars. One of the cars has been fitted with a modern Athern motor and new bands.

When the prototypes for these were in use did they actually pull anything? What years were they used? I have one that is a passenger only car and one that is a combined passenger / postal car.

The B&O and later Marc used buddcars from the 1950's all the way up into the mid 80's on the former b&o mainlines out of Baltimore and Washington. B&O also used them on the mainline between Washington and Pittsburgh. They did not pull anything since they were self contained powered railcars. They would just hook up as many as they needed and run all of the powered cars together. Reading and PRSL also used them out of Philly. The PRSL would start off with several units on their way to Cape May and break up the units when they reached junctions where the trains would go in different directions.

Budd cars are cool I think.
It seems Budd made several different models for many railroads all over the world. But when I think Budd car I think of RDC-1, RDC-2 and RDC-3.

BC RAIL used them from 1972 to 2002.

I haven't seen any of these avaiable in BC RAIL paint at the hobby shop.
But it's deffinately something I'll buy come next year.
