Frankly the source for parts will probably be what I often use: ebay or swap meets where i buy broken/partly disassembled older cars. then I canabilize them for parts.

How did you find that number. I called lionel directly and they said there was not a parts listing for that caboose.

That lantern is used on many cabeese going back to the pre war 717. MTH uses a similar one on theirs but their parts pages are fairly useless.
Lionel shows it as NLA but I suspected a few dealers who do a lot a repairs might have had some around.

Brasseurs may have them. The Lionel number is 6008111031.
Brasseurs shortens it to 8111031. $1.00 each but their shipping and handling is high so plan on ordering a few other items.

I have spares for at least one Caboose. Private message me for my address and send me a self addressed envelope, the kind with the bubble wrap inside and I'll send them to you.

Painting the area around the lenses black improves the appearance. An upgrade that costs nearly nothing.

O Scale Markers

For realistic side or end markers try contacting Royz Trains for Tomar (bulb and LED) along with power supplies. Or the rear facing red LEDs. Interior lighting also.

The Tomar markers can fit in many of the Lionel Side holes and affixed with a small amount of super glue.

Why not install better looking lanterns from Tomar Industries? Either incandescent or LED

Tomarindustries.com

Let me suggest that, at over fifty bucks (inc. shipping) for those beautiful, scale lanterns that it's a bit over the price edge for many of us! We aren't all rich.

Tomar Markers

Don’t know where you got your prices for Tomar Markers. Price on Royz Trains is $22.50 for bulb style and $26.50 for LED. He also offers supplies so you can operate off AC track voltage with constant brightness.
