I'd like to know if there is more to keeping a brass locomotive in fine shape compared to plastic models. I got a Akane brass B&O Q4b 2-8-2 and I would like to know more about caring for brass models. Like if you had to remove a smokebox front, if you can superglue or solder, etc. Painting, lubricating gears and links, etc.

Don't handle them a whole lot, the oils on your fingers can effect the finish. Lubing them is pretty much the same as any loco. Always resolder parts to retain value. Also, a professionally done paint job in the railroad colors the model represents is the best way to go---no fantasy schemes or railroads that did not own the locomotive. For example, my one brass loco is a model of the Colorado and Southern's #22 so it would have to be painted accordingly...someday:eek:.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to have it repainted by Tommy Gilbert's in Gettysburg. It'll be in the B&O, probably like late 40's or 50's. But this will definately help me!:thumbsup: Way up! ( from Jim "Mad Money" Cramer)

Sweet, don't forget the pics when it's done. Akane (Ah-cun-nay for newcomers) haven't been around for a long time. Their detail isn't near the level of today's models but they are nice sturdy boogers nonetheless...I likes 'em.
