This drug, which can be purchased over the counter, is being reviewed for use for COVID-19. It has been around for years to treat malaria but it also is used for rheumatoid arthritis. There is a dangerous side effect to it, vision impairment. I know someone who takes it for the arthritis and she must see an Ophthamologist every 6 months.

And that's one of the things they look at when they evaluate a drug: whether the potential side effects are worth it.

I am sorry for the vision impairment of this person. However, you did not provide any reason at all which suggests that her taking the drug is the reason for her eye trouble. You simply said she took the drug and now has vision problems. This is an example of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. A wonderful example of why this is an error in human reasoning is as follows;

Every morning before the sun comes up my rooster crows.
Therefore my rooster crowing causes the sun to come up.

Also it is an anecdote. Regardless of how many people you know or have heard of suffering vision problems after taking the drug does nothing to show the drug is the cause of the vision problems. The plural of anecdote is not data. One must ask one's self "Do these people have something else in common?" among other scientifically sound questions.

I don't know a thing about this drug but I do know a thing or two about critical thinking and logic. My diatribe aside, I hope the drug is successful. I also hope critical thinking is soon taught in American schools starting at grade 1.

...and that's why I don't visit Union Station. Sorry. See you on other areas of the forum :)

If you actually took the time to read my post you would have realized that I NEVER said the drug CAUSED her to have vision problems. Do a google search for side effects of the drug. She sees the doctor to make sure that the drug has not caused any vision problems. I'm sure you got to enjoy your chance to show off your self delusional superior "critical thinking". Stick to reading the actual written words.

In addition to all of that, if one had actually did basic research on the topic, they might have found many studies on the topic. One such clearly more authoritative source might be this one.

Retinal Damage in Chloroquine Maculopathy, Revealed by High Resolution Imaging: A Case Report Utilizing Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy

Or this page from the Mayo Clinic: Chloroquine (Oral Route)

There's also some evidence that it takes fairly long term use to cause the issues.

Chloroquine retinopathy

There's an old saying...

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

Don't do Gamps' work for him. He should have cited sources to support his claim, which now he claims was not his claim. :dunno:

Frankly speaking, if you're telling me that your post was not meant to at least heavily imply the drug is the cause you are
dishonest.

"Not sure about critical thinking"...and that's the problem. You guys can take the rest of this thread to insult me. Doesn't matter I won't be reading.

Insulting someone is much easier than learning how to think so enjoy, guys.

John, if you were implying I should remain silent on the subject please note that I did. The only thing I said about the drug was that I don't know a thing about it. My criticism was aimed at a poorly structured argument.

So long. I'm truly sorry that someone bringing up critical thinking and logic evokes insults.

Now I have to figure out how to delete my account here :)

I wasn’t doing his work. I was calling you out for being a dick. I bet you troll on Facebook too just to get your jollies and make yourself look so much more intelligent than everyone else. Feels good right?

Also one of the first side effects listed on WebMD is blurred vision... THAT was me doing work. The same work you should have done before popping off.

Delete away. You won’t be missed.

Your removing your account because someone said you are wrong AND sighted evidence? That make no sense. At all.

Ok, let's try this, insult me all you want but give me a chance to figure out how to delete my account first :). There's nothing in formal logic that helps someone who isn't good with computers instantly figure out something like that.

Also before I go, again...I did not have to do any work to show what side effects may or may not result from this drug because I made no claim about the drug's side effects or lack there of. Do you understand?

I was only pointing out a bad argument and I did offer some support for that assertion.

If you guys are so good at navigating the internet I hope you will google logic, logical fallacies, critical thinking and reasoning sometime...there are tons of great websites and books out there.

I'll log out now and delete my account later. You can go back to insulting me.

Holy crap! I can't even log out without seeing another attack. How was I proven wrong? I made no claim that could be proven wrong.

I pointed out the original post implied something that the poster did not support with sufficient evidence. That's all!

You people just don't get it

So you can speak like a college professor and navigate the forum, but you can’t understand something as basic as Google? Who can’t use Google?? It’s like the first thing 99% of us used a computer to do. If I wasn’t having so much fun with this I’d look up how to delete your account for you.

I know what your saying.
All one has to do is read the OP's title.

Plus his saying, "There is a dangerous side effect to it".

Um, excuse me. But..... That was NOT a
“Attack” at all it was just me pointing out that you were rude then tried to play the victim card......
