If the gear ratios/motors allow them to run very close to the same speed when not coupled together then yes. If they run at different speeds however they'll just fight each other as one drags/pushes the other around.

Well, yes. But it seldom works as well as if they are made by the same manufacturer and of close to the same model

Tell us what control system you have ?.. If you are older analog DC, good luck......
If you are newer DCC you can consist, triple head, and speed match a Bachmann 2-8-0 steam engine with an Athearn SD45 diesel and a brass Brill trolley car if they are all DCC, too..

PS. Sorry. I typed this up before noticing the O scale category... which is probably 3 rail.
