hey breeze welcome to the forum! I live in Baltimore and there are about a half dozen really nice shops in the baltimore metro area, the closest to you would be some of the shops in gaithersburg and rockville, don't know exactly where they are but google maryland train shops and I'm sure you will have quite a few options. I think peach creek shops in laurel might be the closest one to DC that I have been to, it really is a nice shop, but its a steel mill modelers club that has meetings there on thursday nights. it is also small and like I said they specialize in steal.

Coolbreeze, welcome to the forum! Modelling is creating a scaled-down version of something: a building, your town, a city, and so on. In essence, you shrink the buildings and people to match the size of your train, but accurately represent the area. So, a steel mill modelers club is representing an industrial area---a steel mill---as the key detail to their train layout. The layout may also include the city around it, or the mountains where the ore is being mined and shipped by rail to the mill: they decide what details to reproduce in the layout.
