DCC and DC

I have a DC layout with blocks. Can I connect a DCC system on top of the DC and use either one I want? Not at the same time of course.

It is also important that no DC loco is standing idle on
the DCC track. The motor can be seriously damaged.
It is recommended that you have special spur tracks
than can be 'turned off' so you can park your DC
locos safely.

I can see that happening very easily, even with experience MRR's. ;)
