Hi all. Was wondering, can sound effects be added to this unit? I know speed, lighting, and direction can be controlled, but was wondering about the possibility of adding sound.

I am just gathering all the information for my soon to be temporary layout.

You can definitely get a sound decoder for that unit. A generic EMD will probably work just fine. The real question is the cost. A sound decoder will probably run $80.00 to $100.00 plus speaker plus installation unless you put it in yourself. Your locomotive is about $50.00 to $60.00. I personally love Bachmann DCC equipped locomotives and I have about a dozen of them none have sound. You have to decide if you want to put that much into that locomotive, maybe a RTR DCC sound equipped locomotive is the better way to go at about $150.00 to $250.00. Good luck.

if you have a ez command I think it will only do one sound with no option to change it other dcc controllers will let you chose the sound

FM, I don't have a DCC controller as yet. I am gradually filling the gaps in for what I need in HO and my Prewar trains.

I am presently building a train building, but with so many responsibilities with my grandchildren and grown children, it is going slow.

I do however, plan to get a temporary layout setup to run just what I have at present.

I have been away from trains for many years until I joined the first train forum (Yahoo based prewar). Between here and there, I have already learned a lot.

Do need to see what controller to use. At present, only have the one DCC HO loco. Rest of HO locos are just runners. Though, I am thinking now that sounds aren't all that important right now. Maybe buy a loco later with it incorporated in it.

I plan on a mixed layout with prewar Lionel, Marx; and HO. Have seen it done many times with Lionel Standard gauge, Lionel O gauge, American Flyer; etc.

do a good bit of research before getting a dcc controller and see if there is a train club near you and see if they will show you their dcc set up if this is an option...there are a lot to chose from...some are more expensive than others but will give you more control on the decoder settings... I have the ez command ... got it for my little engineer, hes only 5 and can run the set as good or better than me...well its really all his as it started with a 117 dollar set at Christmas and we're at or above a thousand now but he loves it and thats all that matters

Another possibility to consider would be a Symphony77 made by MRC.
A simple solution for sound.
