Almost any diesels can be run in combination together:

Some caveats:

  • a number of smaller switcher models don't have M.U. (multiple unit) connections and CANNOT be run in sets
  • some early Baldwin units had a different sort of air-operated MU throttle and couldn't consist with other builders' units. Later diesels all used a common standard so consists of any builders' units would work
  • some of the "cab" units (like F and E series units) did not have MU connections on the nose and could only be facing outwards from a consist
