If you want to see German efficiency, go to Switzerland.

The trains aren't the only infrastructure problems German seems to have let go recently. The Stuttgart Flughafen, Berlin Flughafen,
Köln's City Archive collapsed recently, cost overruns plague a new philharmonic concert hall in Hamburg. Etc., etc.

The list goes on.

I can't honestly say the two are related, but it seems to me that Germany holds debt to the tune of hundreds of billions of DM to failing countries that had irresponsible elected governments for decades, and now the pinch is real in terms of Germany's ability to both lend money and to spend it on troubled infrastructure and utilities. Germany's largesse, even if out of kindness, is killing it, ironically, although the old saying is that you can kill your kids with kindness.

It's the opposite problem. They've been on binge called frugality. They sent their debt levels down from several years back and its made it hard to borrow the right amount to get certain things done. They also weren't too keen on propping up neighbor states unless they followed their model. But like anything... sometimes too much of a good thing is a bad thing.
