they are in. now to decide if i leave them on the platforms or to build a styrene base and mount them straight to that... or mount them and bases to styrene. gonna poke around but need to get styrene and glue...

You could cut the bottoms of the cars into their platforms. The ladders, the wheel wells, etc.

For any holes or slots you want to close up I use JB weld (epoxy may work as well). Strip the platform of all paint. Then use Scotch tape on the exposed side over the opening. Then cover that with a stronger tape (duct tape, etc). On the inside I fill he hole or slot with JB Weld. When dry, the glue is flush with the exposed side. Then peel the tape and paint as normal.

Here's a sample in progress. The tinplate was stripped and the JB Weld has dried. Ready for painting. This is how it looks after removing the tape. No sanding needed.
