Hi all, names Kyle Im 32 from Ohio. I got into model trains when I was about 8. My father built me 2 4x8 tables in an L shape in our basement for my HO trains. Was a big passion till high school and I let it sit. Eventually moved out and everything was packed up. Fast forward 15+ years and my son just turned 6 and loves trains. Took him to a local train show where he picked out a new engine and some cars (they were cheap only $15) and told him Id see what I could dig up. Found a lot of my old track and set him up a little oval for now. Would love to set up a 4x8 in our basement when I get time. Did have some questions as its been awhile since Ive done this. Just wanted to introduce myself and glad to be here.

Welcome to the forum! You and your young son should have a great time together with a train layout. You will probably want to keep things small and simple for now. Does your son have any ideas about what he wants you to build for his new train?
Feel free to ask any questions you like.

again welcome;

Your old track is likely to be brass. This material
requires regular cleaning to afford good electrical
conductivity. Give special attention to the tops of
the rails. Make sure the joiners between sections
are tight for the same reason.

Older locos often need to be cleaned and lubricated.
The lubricant may have gelled hindering the efficient
gear operations. Relube using plastic friendly gels and
oils available at hobby shops...Labelle's is a good brand.

Make sure the loco wheels are clean. The easy way
to do this is to make an alcohol spot on a paper towel.
Place this on the track and run the loco front wheels
onto the spot. Hold the loco as you raise the speed
so it's wheels are spinning in the alcohol. Repeat
with rear wheels.
