Hello there,

New member here! I've made the switch from years of HO and N as a kid to O Gauge! I've bought some used MTH Protosound 2 locomotives from a local collector thinning his collection and I'm having a few issues I know you can help me with!

Let's start with the easier issue: MTH F3 ABA Jersey Central Set. Model number 20-2483-1. I've only tried to operate the A unit as I don't have room to try the others. It's works fine however there is no smoke switch/pot on the underside of the locomotive where the manual said it should be. I've taken off the shell but could not find it! Any ideas how I turn off the smoke?

The second locomotive is a little more complicated. It's a 0-6-0 yard switcher. When I put this locomotive on the track and apply power using a Z1000 and DCS Remote Commander, nothing happens. After doing research it seems that it MIGHT be the battery (MTH 9V like battery) which I replaced and now it's charging using the MTH charger. I took it off the charger after a few hours but still nothing except a single "click" from the tender. I'm going to let it charge over night and see what happens. If it's not the battery, any idea what it could be?

***UPDATE*** - Locomotive still does not run after being charged all night.

Thanks!

The ABA manual (figure 3) shows two potentiometers on the underside with the smoke volume pot near the center behind the lead truck and the sound volume to the top of the figure. Those units are meant to be operated tethered. Both A units have motors and smoke units, but I suspect that only one of the A units has the PS2 boards and potentiometers. Did you look at the other A unit?

What is the MTH PN for the steamer? If it is a PS1/QSI, and if someone tried to run it with a dead battery, it may need to be reprogramed.

Thanks for the replies! I am at work right now but I will post model numbers as soon as I get home.

First off, we need actual model numbers.

Pictures are useful if you're questioning features. Specifically, let's see a shot of the 20-2483-1 that shows this area.

Those pots are not present on either A units or the B unit. I will post photos when I get home.

Thanks

Like John said. This is a UP F-7 from 2004.

That is most interesting for an MTH diesel unit. I have never seen a diesel with the switch & charging port at the front or rear of the engine area. I have 7 MTH steam or diesel engines and never seen one with that set-up before.

The most challenging one I had was a 4-8-4 MTH steam engine for Reading Lines as it had the charging area underneath the tender and volume switch and another switch on the top of the tender.

So it seems that you really need to look at your MTH steam or diesel engines real close to find all their features or charging port areas.

My newest MTH engine, a Reading SD-70ACe has the access port, area to adjust volume and steam output, under one of the covers near the back of the engine. It is a PS-3 MTH engine and I am using it with the MTH DCS unit and MTH Z-1000 for now.

Mark, you don't have to remember. It's diagramed in the instruction booklet. Without that I never would have found it unless by accident! :)

Jon, I hope your family emergency worked out for the best.
