I am using all Roundhouse axils in mine, the ones with the brass axil and plastic wheels. They roll freely and more importantly I purchased 85 pairs for $3.50 shipped of off EBay. I do prefer metal wheel sets if they are blackened because I like the sound they make. Also I think there is slightly less rolling resistance. But I rarely use them due to the cost unless the kit I am building includes them.

I use Intermountain, P2K and Kadee regularly...each is slightly different in width as some don't fit where others will. Metal wheelsets are a great way to keep your track clean with regular use. Yes, they are a bit of an added expense but can be picked up in box lots at swap meets for a reasonable price.
