This is a tough Google question. I found plenty of O scale companies, but you want HO.
I know they were made in the late sixties. I do not remember the company. The were hard plastic sets, Knight and Vikings, Battle of the Bulge and Custer's Last Stand. Gee it came with castle and everthing. I will post if I find something. But ebay or google is the best bet.

Those were put out by Airfix and they were done as HO/OO scale. They were a bit oversize for HO but not too bad. The company is still around and does 1/72 scale figures now... http://www.airfix.com/airfix-products/dioramas-and-figures/figures/
