My question is about a starter set of 027 scale with a 244 engine.

I have the engine, caboose, flat car, transformer, and track. The track I have is 8 curved sections and 3 straight. Am I missing some track or do I have an extra straight track section? What was the original setup?

In my opinion, You need the original box with the set number, to have an actual set. The 224 was offered in a number of sets, with various carsover a period of years. I checked a 1940 catalog that as two 224 engine sets. Both were 51 1/8 by 30 7/8th, Ovals. So it was 8 pieces of o curves at 31 inch diameter and two staight, or four for both ways,as a guess.

Welcome to the forum. The 224 is a favorite of mine.

One set with a 224 has a gondola, tank car, and a flat car that dumps with a caboose. Sets normally have two pieces of rolling stock besides a caboose. I may nothave the year yours was a set.

Ahhh ... 244 ... not 224.

That's a Scout type loco. 1959, I think. Not too common of a loco, though the Scout types have only moderate value.

I'm not sure about # of straight track sections. O27 would be right for a Scout. I have a book in my office that might tell ... I'll try to peek tomorrow.

Red,

I checked my Lionel postwar catalog book (Doyle).

The 244 was offered in the 1627S set in 1960, and in the 1642 and 1809 sets in 1961. The book says that all came with "eight 1013 curved and two 1018 straight track".
