Hello,

I purchased the below new haven locomotive, SD-18 (18806).
It runs very rough. When i stop it everything comes to screaching halt. It doesnt roll too good either. I also just got a sort of similar Delaware and Hudson RS-3 and that runs perfectly. Very smooth. Comes to a normal rollingstop when i turn off the transformer. Is this how the new haven one is supposed to be or does this engine need repair. It came with a list of places to repair it near me. I have no issues getting it repaired so long as it won't cost a fortune OR is there nothing wrong with it and thats just how these models run? Thanks for any help!

the problem is, this motor has NO flywheel so it will come to a dead stop with very little coasting.
So yes, just kind of how this model works.

The SD-19 was produced in 1989. I wouldn’t surprise me if it has 1 or 2 pullmor motors (with no flywheel) which might explain the rapid stops. At any rate, I would remove the shell and give it a good cleaning and lube. That should help it to rub smoother.

Is the RS-3 more recent? With flywheels on the motors?

EDIT: Jetguy beat me to the punch by a split second. Not a pullmor, but no flywheel. Advice on clean and lube still stands.

Again, sorry, you seem to have purchased what I would not consider one of Lionel's best engines.
It's not terrible or anything, but as you can see, single can motor drive with no flywheel, no provisions to add one, so it kinda runs how it runs.
Your other engine is completely different in motor truck style gearing.
I think you have this RS-3 engine 6-18814
This has was I call sidewinder style motor trucks where the motors and gearing is NOT a worm gear and thus the motor even without a flywheel is free rolling when power is removed.

Again, you gave the number of your SD-18 6-18806 which I looked up in Lionel parts and validated, it is single vertical can motor with a worm gear drive that is NOT what we call backdrivable where the wheels can spin the motor when coasting. Since the motor has no flywheel, then it tends to stop more quickly, and then also, the wheels and momentum of the train cannot backdrive and spin the motor.

The other engine you are saying reacts differently and coasts:
You did not give the number of your D&H RS-3, however, some googling shows only a few models were made.
The first one is also the same rough time period as the SD-18 6-18814, which unfortunately, did not come up listed in Lionel parts or diagrams. However, more searching for pictures on the web of that specific engine show the motor truck and gearing which is free rolling and backdrivable even without a flywheel.

The other one that came up is a modern Lionchief Plus Delaware & Hudson LionChief Plus RS-3 #4121
Which DOES have flywheels and thus also would coast.

Ok, I haven’t been running it because I thought it needed repairs. The D&H I have is the older one, not the modern Lionchief version. I almost took the new haven one to the repair shop. I think I much prefer ones with flywheels. I will see what cleaning is needed under the shell too. Thank you for your help!

The 6-18806 is one that I've seen more than once. As stated, it wasn't one of Lionel's finer moments. Not only the lack of the flywheel, but the motor positioned in the front makes this an anemic puller, and as stated, it doesn't coast at all. In order to make smooth stops, you have to gently reduce the speed to minimum and then do your reverse or stop.
