I have a plastic Bachmann shorty caboose that is this toy like red color with a shiny black plastic undercarriage...
...and I wanted to repaint and decal it, but couldn't separate the top from the bottom. Eventually figured out that it was tack glued at each corner, so a little gentle persuasion with the old trusty Exacto on the corners popped it right off. Great, now I can repaint it a decent red.
I'm pretty certain that someone else must have come up with this long before I did, but I got the bright idea to sandblast the plastic shell to break the surface shine on it and make it look older. But sandblasting the undercarriage is what really made a difference!
It went from shiny black plastic to looking exactly like cast metal...
Oooh... this got me really excited at all of the possibilities.
Still need to paint the roof and details black and decal it... but so far I'm totally pleased with the results of sandblasting plastic.
Ooh... than I got another idea... sandblast the roof of the old metal caboose...
...for a granular "asphalt roofing" effect. Flat black should look really cool on it.
