OK so right out front I'll admit I'm not an enthusiast. What I am is a grandfather who loves to see the smile all trains bring to a 4 year old's face. Hoping to get some help here to make that happen.

So are you asking how to use something you already have or buy something for around the tree, or, what?

Thomas the train is a sure fired winner. You can get wooden track and battery powered locos that go by themselves.

As for electric, there's the Lionel Thomas the train with handheld remote. http://www.lionel.com/products/thomas-friends-o-gauge-train-set-loco-1-6-30069/

Other options are anything steam engine based such as Polar Express.

Don't forget an Engineer's hat.
