While living in a small mobile home, room size was limited. Since the kitchen had cabinets with tops avaialble, I continued with a shelf around the Kit. and dining room. This rectangle came out about 12" X 22". If you leave, you can tell the next people that it is a knick-knak shelf, and leave it behind.
In my new place, I made the shelf one foot wide for 2 tracks and bldg's . Each corner has the seasons theme. With and "overhead" railroad around the room, you don't have to worry about windows and doorways getting in the way. No floor space is lost for your furniture. The disadvantage is you can't see the back track, raise the track about an inch or so. You will neeed a small step ladder as reg. equipment.
