I recently got a lionel 2055 steam loco I was l running it and it just stopped. I noticed that the buildings on my layouts lights had dimmed. I then realized that there was a short I took everything off the tracks and put them back on one by one. I had all the freight cars on and there was no short I put the engine on and the controller registered a short. I took the top off the loco the wires were all in order. I tried running it without the top and I still had a short. I then examined the locos rollers they were extremely hot. As a note the locos smoke unit was gushing out smoke when it shorted. Does anyone have any idea what's rong

Using the process of elimination to find the problem.
It could also be a bad 'E' unit, a shorted armature, or a shorted wire.

You need to eliminate any potential problem one at a time.
