Has anyone a formula for replicating or coming very close to the bright red paint Lionel used for its #2245 Texas Special F-units? I know how to get a reasonable shine to a Williams paint job, which is rather dull compared to the Lionel method, but that involves using gloss spray over the enamel. It is somewhat brighter and closer to the Lionel (see my attached photos), but still not that great "autobody" shine from the original paint. Thanks for any input...

Are you wanting to repaint the one you are showing in the picture?
I think it looks good. :dunno:

Thanks for the nice comment, Ed. It's not that I'm dissatisfied with the Williams units; they're great, but I had to use a clear spray gloss to try to get some of that original Lionel sheen, and it didn't work. I'm hoping someone has a good idea on how to get that glossy look in the paint, because I want to paint an old SW2 in a Texas Special scheme...

Have you tried a furniture polish? Something like lemon pledge?

If you using new paint I would guess that a gloss paint would get the shiny look?

Thanks to Ed and Big Al for good suggestions. I went back on some old CTT mags. and found an article about the formulation of the gloss-red paint for the Lionel #38100 Texas Specials from a few years ago. Apparently Lionel had a hard time replicating that "auto body" hard-gloss finish itself and was determined to keep the correct formulation to itself. So I'm kind of back where I started, which is okay. If it were easy for guys like me to do a total knockoff of a special paint mix, they'd sell fewer items...
