Ok this is going to scream n00b alert.. tried google, tried searching here and came up empty...

I was looking at my 624 Switcher and noticed the couplers on the front and back have copper windings...

so I have to ask because I just don't know and cant find anything out....

how does one use them to activate open/close? and next question is how does one operate the standard lionel couplers on the cars? I just pick the car up and drop the coupler into the other coupler and get wheels on the track..

time to learn this itty bitty thing that has been driving me crazy...

The 624 has coil couplers with sliding shoes. You need a UCS track to activate them by placing the sliding shoe over an activation rail.

Most Lionel freight/passenger car couplers from about 1950 on use some kind of drop plate or thumb tack to open the coupler. You pull down on the little plate below the coupler and it will open up. They can also be opened using the magnet in the middle of a UCS track.
