I am in need of a Lionel caboose (Lionel 6-17617) Cupola top corner grab iron. I tried looking on the Lionel parts site but cannot seem to dig up any info about replacement parts for this caboose. Any ideas? I wanted to keep it original if I can...

The original is plastic, but wire could be used to replace it. It is a simple bend. I was going to sell the caboose and I wanted to try and keep it original.

I followed T-Man and Midlands lead and sifted through the Lionel parts site with no luck. I even tried the North Lima Trainworks with even less success.

Thanks for the help guys.

I was recently put on to another site that literally has tons of post-war parts, including several caboose railings:

http://stores.smittystoytrainparts.com/search.php?search_query=Caboose

But no exact match for your part as far as I can see and they have a $40 minimum order although the individual parts are mostly cheap.

I have a caboose similar to yours and the grabirons (Lionel makes one word out of two) seem to be part of the body shell as a whole.

Thanks Pete. I will follow up on that.

I tried searching their site a couple times and couldn’t get any decent results thru their search option. It would be nice if they just listed items but they probably have a huge inventory and it wouldn’t be feasible...

Tom, i think the number I gave you is a dead end. Smitty's has them and it appears to be the handrail used on the plastic NYC Cabeese which are all wrong. Rather than being used in each corner they are straight and go across each side of the cupola.
I started by searching Lionel's site on handrail and found a couple labeled caboose cupola. The number above was one of them. The other being a corner grab on the NYC diecast caboose but those are metal and don't have the bolt detail on the ends.

Okay, thanks Pete. I looked again too and found the second cupola grab iron.

At this point I am thinking of going the wire route and use a tiny dab of epoxy to simulate the bolt detail.
